powervault 110t dlt vs160 invalid command error

I am unable to make successful backups with ntbackup.
I am using a poweredge 1800 with server 2003.

The backups proceed normally but at the end I get message:

Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to media.
Error reported: Invalid command.
There may be a hardware or media problem.

-the tape drive came installed, I installed the new drivers fron the dell cd following the instructions

-when I run the diagnostics from the cd (powervaulttools, everything is fine in all tests, firmware 1E00,

-I have tried short backups and long ones but the result is the same.

-the dell site does not show any new drivers for this unit.

any suggestions welcome.

I installed an evaluation version of veritas backup exec 9.1 and was able to do a succesful backup with this drive.

This confirms to me at least that there is nothing wrong with the hardware.

I am not keen to go and buy this software and hope to be able to use ntbackup since my backup needs are pretty simple.

Any suggestions for making this drive work with ntbackup?
