I would rather use the HA functionality in the vmware cluster and leave storage replication to the NX440. Is this possible?

Yes, it is possible. I suggest you to check the VMware related to vSphere HA. Please, if you have any question related to the hardware don't hesitate to ask.

I have found online that the PowerEdge NX440 comes with Server 2016 Storage server edition. * How to create a LUN so i connect it to my ESXi host using iSCSI. * Wow to setup synchronous sync between the 2 NX440. My client doesn't want a vsphere cluster but wants to create a identical VM on each site. When a host fails in location 1 he wants to manually login on location 2 and start the VM from replicated storage. Believe me, i know.
