Precision 3420 (SFF) CPU upgrade

I have a Small Form Factor 3420 tower with an Intel Xeon E3-1220 v5 3.00GHz CPU, which I would like to upgrade. I'm having a hard time just figuring out what my options are, and whether the SFF chassis restricts what I can put into the machine. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

I would like to swap the CPU with one of the following:

Intel Xeon E3-1270 v5 SkyLake 3.6 GHz LGA 1151
Intel Xeon E3-1270 V6 Kaby Lake 3.8 GHz (4.2 GHz Turbo) LGA 1151 72W

Is there any reason either of those would not work?

Thanks !

The Precision T3420 originally shipped with the 1270v5 as an option when it came out so that is a drop in upgrade. The 1270v6 (or other E3v6 for the matter) will however, a BIOS update is needed before it can boot so don't off that 1220 just yet. I assume you are running an external graphics card at the moment as the 1220v5 does not have integrated graphics. One thing to keep in mind is neither the 1270v5 or v6 have integrated graphics as well.

Based on the current going prices of 6th and 7th gen E3 CPU's (12/17/18/) you may want to consider a 1245v5 given the performance/price metrics. I just picked on up on ebay a just a few days ago for $180 after tax and all. I just did a quick search and found some local 1270v5's for $245 and up. The 1245's do find their way onto ebay you just need patience and a saved search with alerts on the ebay app.

EDIT: Upon further investigation I dont see any argument to prefer the 1270 over the 1245 based on benchmark scores on Userbenchmark.com or Passmark.com. They are so close that its 100% with the savings
