Realtek High definition Audio Driver not working on Precision T3610 after Windows Update 20H2

After upgrading to feature update 20H2 of windows the Realtek High Definition Audio driver and sound no longer work and I am usable to install in of the drivers on the system of online.  The install fails.   The only sound I can generate is through the HDMI cable to my monitor from my NVIDIA K4000.

The log of a particular attempt to install the base driver is below.

@speedstep

Hello - I now have sound from my speakers, but my headphone jack is inoperable.

From within Device Manager, I used the Update Driver option and "Browse my computer for drivers" - "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer".  Then I selected "High Definition Audio Device" which turned out to be a Microsoft driver.    Some sound is better than nothing, but not perfect by any means.

@speedstep  Thanks - I appreciate the help.

I mistyped.  I didn't point to the CAB file, I extracted it to my documents and used the driver folder as the location to search for the "local drivers".  That said, I didn't follow your instructions exactly - my mistake.

I will try it again, knowing I can get back to what works how.

I did find a solution that restored full functionality. Based on this video, I did not have the Realtek HD Audio Manager installed and followed the video to re-install the Realtek utility.  From there all of the HD Audio drivers downloaded locally could be used to update the Sound, Video, and game controllers devices in Device Manager.

I selected the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver:

  • Version: 6.0.1.6070
  • DirectX:12.0
  • Audio Controller: HD Audio
  • Audio Codec: ALC3220

which restored full function of the back and front panel jacks with full sound quality.  My PC can properly detect the headphones plugged in and shut off the back speakers and vice versa.  Other drivers I toggled between did not detect the front jack or the sound quality was very poor.

I never had a yellow triangle or question mark, when the drivers were missing, there was a small green question mark with a circle around it.

Appreciate the help.

A 1603 essentially means “an error occurred” trying to commit the change, causing msiexec.exe to “backout the change”. This type of error is either caused by msi corruption or by malware.

The sfc /scannow command is one of the several specific switches available in the sfc command, the Command Prompt utility invoking System File Checker.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  3. Type the following command to perform a quick check and press Enter:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

To perform an advanced scan with DISM, use these steps:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  3. Type the following command to perform an advanced DISM scan and press Enter:

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Try this and you should be back to working.

There is a way to fix that WITHOUT an installer.

Download and install 7zip

https://www.7-zip.org/download.html

Then download the 3610 WIN10 driver cab file it has ALL Drivers for the model

http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER04895591M/1/T3610-WIN10-A03-XPNV2.CAB

Move the cab file from downloads to the my documents folder

Right click on the cab file and say 7zip extract here.

Then go back into device manager and right click the hd audio generic microsoft drivers and say

UPDATE Driver from my PC not on the internet.

It will then find the OEM driver and replace it.

Make sure you are offline when you do this so that it wont look online to try to install automatically.

Hello and thank you @speedstep, I tried the recommendation.... uninstalled workaround driver rebooted downloaded and installed 7-zip moved to document folder downloaded the cab file and unzipped it (to new folder) from Device Manager, update driver, browse my computer, 1st try, I put the path to the new cab file - failed to install, 2nd try let me pick, I have disk, put the path to the new cab file - failed to install the driver installed failed to installed, message unable to install. Essentially it is the same issue as using the installer. No luck after 20H2 updated with Realtek drivers at all, they won't install. I have to use the workaround Microsoft HDA driver, but it only works for either the back or front speaker ports which I can select using the audio troubleshooter, the driver cannot auto select the input based on headphones plugged into the headphone jack.

You cannot point to the cab file

It must be in c:\users\username\mydocuments

You then must EXTRACT the contents of the CAB file by right clicking on it and with 7ZIP EXTRACT HERE command.

Then you go into DEVICE MANAGER

Click on each audio component and say UPDATE DRIVER FROM MY PC Not from the internet.

It will then say look in my documents and sub folders.

Do that for every yellow ! or generic driver.

Realtek drivers are disabled and crippled by microsoft by design.

After every feature update they stomp on the driver because the bad guys figured out how to hack the realtek certificate for the windows installer.

Stuxnet worm was signed using stolen certificates from RealTek and JMicron.

Researchers have discovered a pair of malware families that were digitally signed using compromised credentials from Taiwanese tech companies

eventually there were other problems like the Bluetooth KNOB problem and INTEL VIDEO , INTEL RST, INTEL Management engine, NVIDIA Drivers, ATI Drivers etc.

So you have to remove then reboot then reinstall the most current drivers for your OEM Realtek audio or its broken along with waves maxx audio which is bundled with the Realtek drivers.

There is NO One Size fits ALL for ALL models so which version depends on the EXACT model of your codec.

When I reboot my laptop with my headphones plugged in, they work.

Two reasons can be possible if Realtek audio driver not working well

1. Bad sound quality
2. Unable to detect connected microphones, headphones, and other sound devices.

To fix these issues, follow a trustable guide, where we’ll show how to resolve any issues caused by the Realtek HD Audio driver.

You can get help from below mentioned article -
