Upgrade PSU from 460W to 850W in Precision 3630

Hi

Does anyone if it's possible to replace the stock 460W PSU with a better (perhaps 850W) PSU in a fairly new Precision 3630 workstation purchased in 2020

TIA

Did @DELL-Cares answer?

If it takes a normal sized PSU, EVGA B1 or BR should work.  Corsair is a good brand too.  You might even find one made by Dell.

Did you ever manage to find a suitable 850W PSU for the 3630? I am also looking to upgrade to a 850W PSU with the same PC.

I couldn't find a Dell 850w PSU for the 3630 either.  EVGA is the next best bet.  Make sure it has the same, if not more, power on the 3.3v/5v rails.  Otherwise, it won't work.  Some PSU's boast more total wattage, but skimp on the 3.3v/5v rails.

IF you have an actual Tower A regular EPS12v power supply with 150W on the 3.3v/5v rails works fine.  HOWEVER the power to the optical drive is SATA 15 pin to mini sata 6 pin.

Thanks very much for the quick replies. Do you think this would also work?:

realised a 750W is probably sufficient, I primarily need this to power a GPU which has a recommended PSU of 650W.

As far as I can tell this should be compatible with the motherboard in the 3630?

It looks nice, but I'm not the most confident about it working.  Check the total 3.3v/5v wattage on your current PSU.  Is it 142w?  The PSU you linked says 120w.

One thing I don't quite understand though is why it says only 120w.  Volts x amps = watts.  Therefore, I'd think the total would be 199.20 watts.  May be speedstep would know more about that.

Below are 2 screengrabs.  The PSU you linked and a label from a Dell 460w PSU for the 3630.  By the way, I had to greatly blow up the image and upright it for the 460w PSU.  So it's a little blurry and might be blurrier once uploaded.

It would help to know what GPU you plan on using.  If you already know its watts, that's also a plus.

If you want - What's your exact CPU?  I can check it against the GPU for any potential bottleneck.

having less than 140W might be a problem

power supplies have more than 1 rail and more than a single spec of watts.

The GPU I have is an RTX3070 and the CPU I have is an i7-9700, I will keep looking to see if I can find another compatible PSU, thanks again for your help so far and for pulling up the Dell 460W PSU specs

Yes, the PSU linked by speedstep should absolutely work, without a doubt.  It goes along with what we both been saying - must have the same, if not more power on the 3.3v/5v rails as the original PSU.  And the linked PSU exceeds speedstep's recommendation of 150w on those rails.
