Precision 7550 add power button with fingerprint?

Hey, anyone know for sure if the power button with fingerprint can be added to the precision 7550?  or does the upgrade require a different keyboard?  Thanks

The fingerprint reader is part of the palmrest assembly -- and though the component is not expensive (see link below), also see the service manual -- the entire system has to be torn apart to replace the palmrest.  Whether that's worth the benefit of the fingerprint reader is up to you, but bear in mind that if the system is under warranty, anything damaged in the process of stripping down the system and reassembling it will not be covered by warranty - and since just about everything inside the system has to come out or off to do the job, the risk of damage is not negligible.

there is also another fingerprint reader that is just a different power button, with the scanner on the top.  Just had hand surgery so i'm waiting for sure. thanks.

Is the power button supposed to be lit if there is no fingerprint reader? We were given a refrubed 7550 and cannot confirm with anyone else in the company is a backlit power button is a feature of this model. Thanks!

This is somewhat incorrect. The 7550 came with two different fingerprint options. One was in the palmrest and the other was combined with the power button. The Powerbutton/fingerprint reader is a separate part that is held by two screws to the palmrest.

The service manual (page 60) indicates that it can be changed out by removing the bottom cover, battery, and the heatsink. That is still somewhat difficult, but not nearly as intensive as removing the entire palmrest.

This would be the stand alone button/fingerprint reader.
