TB16 - Dock NVM firmware update failed on Precision 5530

You may receive the following error while installing the 1.0.5 firmware update for the Dell TB16 docking station:
Dock NVM - Thunderbolt Dock Firmware Update failed:

2022-05-03 08_22_05-Dell Firmware Update.png

When you try to run the following command manually you may get an error that the firmware update tool did not find a (suitable) Thunderbolt driver:

  • FWUpdateCmd.exe UpBme

The firmware update tool requires the older Intel Thunderbolt Controller driver version 17.4.79.510, A12 for Windows 10 version 1909 (19H2) or lower, dated March 6, 2019:

  • Intel-Thunderbolt-Controller-Driver_TBT79_WIN_17.4.79.510_A12.EXE

2022-05-03 08_25_22-Support for Precision 5530 _ Drivers & Downloads _ Dell US and 70 more pages - W.png

So first you need to uninstall the newer version, e.g. 1.41.1193.0, A11 dated November 5, 2021:

2022-05-03 11_57_26-Clipboard.png

Next reboot and install the older Intel Thunderbolt Controller driver version 17.4.79.510, A12.  The first installation attempt(s) may fail.  Reboot again and try a couple of more times until driver is successfully installed.

As the driver is only supported on Windows 10 version 1909 (19H2) or lower, you may need to use another Dell laptop with an older Windows 10 version and an USB-C/Thunderbolt port to be able to update the firmware.

Once the older Intel Thunderbolt Controller driver version 17.4.79.510, A12 is installed you can try and install the 1.0.5 firmware update for the Dell TB16 docking station:

2022-05-03 08_40_22-Dell Firmware Update.png

If you are running a Windows 10 version newer than 1909 (19H2), then you can uninstall the older Intel Thunderbolt Controller driver version 17.4.79.510, A12, and install the latest version 1.41.1193.0, A11 dated November 5, 2021 instead:

  • Older version: Intel-Thunderbolt-Controller-Driver_TBT79_WIN_17.4.79.510_A12.EXE
  • Latest version: Intel-Thunderbolt-Controller-Driver_TBTC0_WIN_1.41.1193.0_A11.EXE

Conclusion: you may need to replace your Thunderbolt Controller driver version with an older/specific version to be able to update the TB16 docking station firmware.

Hi mate,

I've done everything you said, installed the specific driver version (Intel-Thunderbolt-Controller-Driver_TBTC0_WIN_1.41.1193.0_A11.EXE) for Windows 10 (21H2 Build 19044.1766) but the Dock NVM firmware update stills fails when running the Dell Firmware Update Utility | Dock tool.

Please refer to the screenshots below,

Anything else to try/suggest please? Would be highly appreciated. I started having BSODs today and I believe they are somehow related with the docking station. I am still going through the Event Viewer logs to understand why.

Thank you.

Hi. Did you ever find a fix for this? I currently have the EXACT same problem when trying to update the firmware on a TB16 connected to a 13" XPS 9360.

As per the instructions in this thread, I uninstalled the latest Thunderbolt controller driver, rebooted, then installed the previous Thunderbolt controller driver (version 17.4.79.510, A12 from March 2019). However, like you, I still get the error when I then try to update using 1.0.5 version of the TB16 firmware update. The update fails when trying to update 'Dock NVM' firmware from 00.0016 to 00.0027.

I notice that after rolling back the Thunderbolt controller driver to 17.4.79.510, A12, when I try to open the Thunderbolt application I get an error saying "This Thunderbolt application is not in use anymore and can be safely uninstalled". Whereas when I have latest Thunderbolt controller driver version installed I can launch the Thunderbolt application.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro 21H2, so I'm guessing the old 17.4.79.510, A12 just cannot run on the newer versions of windows anymore.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

@Haribeau, nope, I haven't found a solution. I'm hoping @croussou might have found a solution. If I do find a solution I'll post it here.

Just bumping this in the hopes that someone will see it who can help.....

As it stands, the accepted "solution" actually no longer works and I , as well as others, am unable to update the TB16 firmware using the latest or any of the previous update installers.

Update problems in this case may be system specific, so if you have the possibility, try to update the firmware with another system.

Yes, I updated my Dell Precision 5530 to Windows 11 and have the exact problem.  There doesn't seem to be a good path to update the TB16 firmware without gyrations that no longer seem to work.  I'm guessing Windows 11 introduces some other variables that prevent an update.

Unfortunately for me, I only have one Dell system that has a thunderbolt port.  Could it possibly work from a Lenovo with a thunderbolt port?

So I've borrowed a friend's Dell laptop, which has a Thunderbolt 3 port, to attempt the TB16 firmware upgrade with a different system, but no luck. When I connect the TB16 to my friend's laptop it connects and works fine, in that the TB16 outputs the video to the external monitor and the USB ports etc all work, but things go wrong when I try to run any of the current or older versions of the firmware updater utility.

When I run 1.0.0 (by right-clicking the .exe and choosing run as administrator),  the utility opens, then when I click OK I get an error stating "No docks attached or this firmware update utility is not supported to your platform".

When I run 1.0.2 as administrator, the utility opens but displays an error saying "warning: no docks attached. This firmware update utility only works with a single dock attached". This is despite the fact that the TB16 is attached and outputting to an external monitor....sigh. At that point all I can do is click "Exit".

When I run v1.0.5 as administrator, the utility doesn't even open and instead I get a pop up saying "Error: Only one dock must be attached before the Dock Firmware can be updated.

Although the TB16 was released in 2017, the technology/specs of the TB16 are still current (Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.0, DisplayPort), so it's an absolute joke that the TB16 is no longer being supported by Dell in the form of an updated utility that works with the latest versions of Windows 10 and 11.

Also, as I have a WD19TBS at work I took the opportunity to use my friend's Dell laptop to check whether there were any firmware or driver updates available for the WD19TBS. There was an ethernet driver update and a firmware update available. I managed to install these updates to the WD19TBS without any issues using my friend's laptop, so clearly it''s just a case of Dell failing to update the firmware utility for the TB16, which is extremely poor form in my opinion.

Okay, finally licked this .. .the hard way ... Booting old Windows 10.

First off, the added gotchas I had ...

Secondly, all of what I used ...

  • Hardware
    • System - Dell Latitude 7390 2-in-1 (your choice of Dell system w/Thunderbolt 3)
      • I value it less than my Dell Precision 5530 (w/64GiB, P2000-4GiB, 2TB 980 Pro, 8TB 2QVO 870)
    • USB - SPARE 32GB USB3.1 Flash Drive (as low as 8GB should work too)
    • M.2 - SPARE 512GB M.2 NVMe (as low as 128GB should work too)

Procedure:

  • UN-plug TB16 Thunderbolt Dock
  • Create Bootable USB of Windows 10 version 1809 in Rufus
    • Save yourself time by leveraging Rufus' ability to auto-create (answer file) user login, region and other options
  • Copy over old Thunderbolt Controller Driver and Firmware(s) to Bootable USB
    • Save time, and don't need to connect to the Internet
  • Update - your main system's BIOS
    • Again, this should be done for the system prior to attempting updating the TB16 Dock
  • Replace system's M.2 NVMe drive with SPARE M.2 NVMe
    • Shutdown, access M.2 bay, but ... don't forget to unplug not only power, but the battery too!
      • Also remember to re-connect the battery
    • Hey, if you're a guru, and want to try to install in another partition, or on a 2nd or USB device ... that's your call.  Me?
      • I consider myself a guru, even run rEFInd Boot Manager, but ...
      • Even I swapped M.2 drives
  • Install Windows 10 version 1809 via USB device
    • Skip setting up Networking and anything else
  • Install old Thunderbolt Controller Driver WIN 17.4.79.510 A12
    • Reboot!
  • Plug-IN TB16 Dock
    • In Thunderbolt Software (manually launch if required)
    • Change to 'Connect' for both Cable and Dock, in-order
    • Verify by relaunching Thunderbolt Software
  • Run TB16 Firmware 1.0.2
    • Update - After it finds everything
    • Wait 30s - once complete
    • Unplug - Thunderbolt cable from system
    • Wait 30s - once Dock unplugged from system
    • Unplug - 130-240W Power AC/DC from TB16 Dock
    • Reboot system
  • [Optional] Run TB16 Firmware 1.0.5
    • After system rebooted, and TB16 Firmware 1.0.2 updated
    • You may attempt with 1.0.5 using the prior procedure
  • Replace system's SPARE M.2 NVMe drive with original M.2 NVMe
  • Have fun!

Hope this helps!

Hello everybody,

I am a little bit confused: are you talking about using Windows 10 or Windows 11 with BT16, once the firmware update is finished with the help of Windows 10 ?

Windows 11 is way too new.  Even recent Windows 10 is too new.

I used Windows 10 Version 1809, October 2018 Update (Build number 17763).
