A920 Compatability with Win ME

I only ask as i was looking to purchase the A920 but i only have Windows ME as my OS.

robd12345,

Thank you for visiting the Dell Community Forum.

Dell has only tested and provided Windows XP and Windows 2000 drivers for the A920 printer.

So what you are saying is that IF you don't have Win2000 or WinXP,  all Dell printers are useless?  If so this presents a huge problem because we bought this particular printer as a gift for family members and they use Win98.

Why would any of your printers not be compatible with any Dell system?!  My son's Dell came with Windows ME preinstalled, and I just ordered him the A920 printer as a birthday gift.  Surprise, surprise, it's NOT compatible with Windows ME!

This is totally unacceptable.  Now I have to go to the expense of returning the printer through the mail.

What a ripoff!

They do mention that it is only compatible with XP or Win 2000 in the tech specs but as they have probably figured out a lot of people do not read down the page that far and  make assumptions that it will work with there operating system. They do not not have the Technical expertise to dig that far on whether it will work or not with there computer. They need to to put a large red warning sign telling of this that will grab the consumer attention so they will check before they buy and then get mad after buying.

Dell had better get ont he ball and get this backward compatability problem fixed of they will start losing customers left and right. You can not assume everybody has a fast computer able to run XP on it or even if they do they are going to change there operating system in order to run the printer they just bought from you. I have to check but I don't think you even warn people that this printer will only run on a XP or Win 2000 system before they buy it.

Regardless ... any Dell accessory should be compatible with a Dell computer.

When someone gives a printer as a gift (as mentioned above), not everyone knows what operating system the gift recipient has on their computer.

It is completely unacceptable to sell printer as the A920 without any tests and driver on windows Me

Just an update to my earlier compatability problem.

I have now installed Windows XP and the A920 works fine.

It was just a shame that i had to install XP in order to get it working.

Ok let me ask a question here.  I am trying to network my printer with two computers one with windows xp and the other one with windows me.  I have been having trouble sharing the printer with the operating system of windows me so I come to dell wesite to see if I can get a driver for my windows me computer so I can share them.  When looking I come across this forum that a920 compatabilty with windows me.  Am I reading this right as my dell printer is not compable with windows me and now I cant share the printer.  Is that what you guys are saying here?  If that is the case that stinks.

O.K. Now that Dell is aware people would like to use their computer w/ a windows ME platform, when does Dell intend to provide the drivers?  Do they?

Thanks...

Thanks for your response, it figures...I emailed the dell rep. directlly and he never bothered to respond.  I just can't believe it would be that difficult to supply drivers for ME.  Thanks again for your help

January 19th, 2004 01:00

It should not be that hard at all. All this printer is is a copy of the lexmark x1150 model. It is made by Lexmark for Dell with the Dell brand name. Unfortunetly the lexmark drivers are not reconized by the printer. But Lexmark does make WinMe drivers for their printer. Go figure?
