Color Laser 3110cn - Legal size not going to MPF

The issue is the same as other posts in the forum - legal size paper is not requested for the MPF. I wonder how worthwhile this forum is. I went through many posts and read the same issue, but none of them had a resolution.

When a legal word doucument is printed on a single tray 3110cn, it is spooled to the printer and the printer wants legal size paper in Tray 1. I tried numerous combinations for the tray settings via the printer's web server and left the Word application print panel unchanged. The results have always been teh same, load legal in Tray1.

The only way I could have the MPF utilized is if I chose it specifically via the Print panel.

Other single tray printers I have worked with; Xerox, Ricoh and HP, would recognize legal size paper is not in Tray 1 and request the use of the MPF. This MPF is requested when a envelope is to be printed via MS Word 2000.

To me it appears to be a driver issue, but there is no new driver available beyond A01, R129781.exe.

You can configure the MPF to accept legal either through the panel or through the software, but it would be easier to pull out Tray 1. At the back of the tray there is a blue lever with an arrow on it. Push in the direction of the arrow and then pull out to lengthen Tray 1 to legal size. Put in the paper and put the Tray back. This should allow the printer to print to the legal paper.

Why can not the printer automatically request the MPF for legal size paper?

The one solution you provided is a cumbersome work around, the readjusting of the Tray 1 paper size.

I have set the MPF via the panel to accept legal size paper. And when I print a MS Word document requiring legal paper it still wants to use Tray 1. Thinking I could change Tray 1 from Auto to letter, I tried to make such a change. But, there are only 2 choices from what I saw, Auto & Custom.

To me your solution is a work around not a fix. If and when the tray breaks, I am sure a Dell rep will say the Tray size should not readjusted on a regular basis. It is not designed to be used in such a manner.

What would be necessary to request a driver modification to have the printer function in a more user friendly mode, i.e. just open the MPF and load the legal size paper.

Actually the tray is designed to be changed in this manner that's why there is a leaver to adjust the tray and if you look on the back of your printer there is a black plastic cover that sticks out a bit which is designed to accommodate the extra length of the tray when legal paper is inserted. Also, if you don't want change the paper tray all the time one option is to get the 500 page 2nd tray which holds standard paper and the set Tray 1 to legal if you don't always want to change the length of the tray. Since I don't know exactly what your are printing or the quantity it's hard to say if either of these is a good option for you, but below are the instructions on how to make the MPF take the legal paper. For me I just usually pull the paper and pull the length of the tray, but if that does not work for you then I understand.

Now about using the MPF if you want to set the MPF to always print on legal here's how to do that.
  1. Of course make sure the document that you are printing is set to legal inside of your document.
  2. Click on File then Print then click on Properties to the right of where the printer is listed at the top.
  3. Next make sure the paper type in the window is set to 8.5x14
  4. Then click on the paper tray tab and change the Paper Source Setting from Auto to MPF then click okay, then okay again to print.

This will set the MPF to print on legal paper.

Well, I finally found a paramter setting which had the Legal size paper go to the MPF on a 3110cn with only 1 tray.

Right click the Dell 3110cn in the ‘Printers’ folders

Printing Preferences – Advanced tab – chg Substitute Tray value from 'Use Printer Settings' to ‘Feed from MPF’
