Dell AIO 948 w/Windows 7 64bit
I'm working on a computer that's running Windows 7 64bit and hasn't been able to connect to their AIO 948 since getting the computer. I've read some of the other topics on this board about the problem, but nothing's resolved it. I have the software downloaded but when I run the setup.exe, under any compatibility mode, I just get to the part that says to plug the printer into the USB port. I've tried the other USB ports on the computer as well as a different cable, but nothing works. Any other ideas?
Thanks.

pantherguy27,
Did you upgrade your computer to Windows 7?
If so, try running Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and post the rest of the information back here.
Also provide the virus program and firewall you're using.
Dell 948 printer, usb cable or wireless adapter?

pantherguy27,
First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Download the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).
Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

No, the computer came with Windows 7.
It's running Miscrosoft Security Essentials and I've turned the Windows Firewall off.
I'm connecting with a USB Cable. I finally got it installed last night after adding the printer manually, not using the wizard. However, when I went to do a test print, I got the error "Incorrect Port Detected."

Thanks.I thought the same thing and tried that last night with no luck. I'm using a USB mouse and tried swapping the cables with each others ports. The mouse still worked but the printer didn't.

pantherguy27,
I'm thinking the usb ports may have an issue. Try...
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)
Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.
Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.
Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.
Then try the printer installation procedure, again.

OK, I tried all of those stpes but I'm still not getting anywhere. I even disabled Microsoft Security Essentials but it's still getting stuck when it tells me to connect the cable.
I tried running the firmware update, thinking that might help, but I get a communications error.
Any other ideas?

pantherguy27,
Try a 4ft or smaller usb cable?
Try this tweak?
Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)
Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.
Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.
Restart your computer.

Changed the setting on all of those, rebooted but still not working. It should not be this difficult. Why would they say it's compatable with Windows 7 and even have drivers for them but still make it so difficult? This is beyond frustrating.

pantherguy27,
Did you try disconnecting the external mouse and they try removing all the usb devices, like suggested, then restart the computer?
Usually when a printer does not install, it's because of a corrupt operating system, malware bad usb prots or printer cable. Virus programs and firewalls block communications.
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware update it and do a quick scan. Remove anything it finds.
Also try reading the Dell 948 All-In-One (PRODUCT) RED™ Printer owners thread (W7) Other forum members were able to install the Dell 948 Printer on their Windows 7 machines with no problems.
