Enable bi-directional support for USB Printer
After Windows 8 upgrade I get Enable bi-directional support if I try to check status of printer.
If I tick the box for the printers port and save when I look again it's not ticked.
Laptop is a Dell Inspiron N5050.
Bios was updated to A05 before windows 8 upgrade.
Any ideas ?

metalstardust,
When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the Desktop/Notebook system software(if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order
Start with the chipset drivers and follow the list.
For the printer...
First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs from the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Hit the Windows and X keys at the same time, programs and features, your printer, uninstall.
Restart your computer. Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
This gives you a clean start with installing the printer.
Install the drivers, if not Windows 8 drivers, try Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 8 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 8 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).
Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications.

Hi
It was an upgrade from W7 - W8 not a manual install. The only thing I found on dell was a new BIOS level for W8 which I installed before upgrading.
Fixed it.
You pointed me in the correct direction. Thx :emotion-2:
The Cannon driver program that is supposed to be W8 compatible was the root cause.
It was installing but W8 was creating a second printer with no driver.
I tried the W7 driver same problem. I then downloaded Vista 64 Bit driver and installed.
Turned printer on and this time the auto created printer picked up the driver. Only have one printer and printer status is back.
It just shows that nobody is ready for W8 despite all the testing. Amazing that you have to go - 2 on OS level to get something working.
Windows 8 is looking like another Vista for bugs.

metalstardust,
Glad you got it working! :emotion-21: Thanks for posting back. I had to do a recovery using the system image on the system I have and noticed all these Vista drivers being installed, so I figured it may work with the Vista drivers, just like it did with Windows 7.
Take care,
Rick
