Possible to add network card to 1700 printer?

Question

Hello all:   I just bought a 1700 printer (brand new) on Ebay and misread the description.  I thought that I was buying the 1700N.  Not that it matters - I still got a great deal.   My question is this:  does anyone know if the network card from the 1700N can be installed in my printer?  I don't see a part for the NIC on Dell's website and I'm afraid the answer is going to be 'no' that the card is integrated with the motherboard. However, if it's like most Lexmark printers, it's a card that's installed into a slot and can replace the current parallel/usb interface.   I have an external print server right now, but would rather have everything internal to save desk space.   thanks in advance,   Jeff   PS. Jeff The network card is integrated onto the controller card. You would have to source the main controller board. As far as I'm aware they are a factory install option only.

The card isn't available seperately. You will need to purchase a print server or attach the printer to a computer on your network and then share it out. The user guide has instructions on sharing the printer on a peer-to-peer network.

You can find the user guide by going to http://support.dell.com and then going to the Product Support menu and select user guides. Then select Dell Printers, then Workgroup Lasers and follow from there.

Thanks for the replies. I'm familiar with sharing printers.... I already have a hard-wired printer server connected, but was hoping to get away with one or two less wires if it was a separate card. Thanks anyway for your help!

What I have done for these 1700 (along with some HP's) is to use a Netgear PS101.

This little print server (under $70) plug right on to the centrix port (printer cable end) and is about the size of a deck of cards. I've been using them for about 2 years, and have never had a problem with them.

It's certainly not *supported* but at least one person purports to have done it.
