Scanning to Email requires Login ID and Login Password? 1815dn

Hello, I just recently bought a Dell 1815dn.  I'm sure you all know by now that the user documentation is atrocious.  :smileysad:

So here is my problem:  On page 78 of the printed manual, it explains how to scan a document and have the dell 1815dn send it to an email address.  Using the keypad on the printer I highlight SCAN>NETWORK>EMAIL and then it prompts me for a login ID and login password.

What is a login ID and login password?!?

There is no documentation explaining how to set this or what it is.  So I am stuck until someone can explain what the default ID and password is and then how to disable it.

(By the way, this is not the same issue as WebTool user name "admin" and password "4455" )  I tried this and it does not work.

You have to configure a Login ID and a password within the network installation procedure.
Later you can change it  with NetScan. First you have to remove the 1815dn device from NetScan, the you can readd it and configure the Login ID and the password.

Hope this helps.

The ID and password feature is a bit annoying if you don't need it (e.g. at a small / home office). Would be better if you could disable it, when not needed.

Hello Iochi009 and thanks for your reply.

I tried using Dell NetScan by right clicking on the tray icon, removing the device, then re-adding the device.  While re-adding the device, I changed the Login ID and password as you suggested.  Using the keypad on the printer I once again hightlight SCAN>NETWORK>EMAIL and unfortunately I am still getting the message "Enter Again" on the printer display, indicating that it did not accept my login ID.  I then tried reinstalling the printer software all over again, reluctantly, and to my surprise this did not work either.

What's going on?  Am I the only one who has tried using the scan to email feature?  What is the default Login ID and password?

I would first check the settings of the printer on the web interface. Just type the IP of the printer in a browser window and click on Email settings on the left. Check the user authentication settings and make sure that isn't checked.

I know in the net scan setup when adding the printer and adding the ID and Pin if you leave the PIN as is it will pop up a message saying it is default and you won't be asked for it. On the printer the PIN will pop up, but you just have to press the check mark button and you are through. It auto fills it with the default.

I am thinking though that your problem is more with the user authentication in the web interface than with the Net Scan. Net Scan is only used for scanning to desktop not email.

Egwillim--

Yes, that was the problem.  Thank you so much!  Disabling "user authentication" worked!  And now when I want to scan something (using SCAN>NETWORK>EMAIL) I can send it to any email address!
