Thanks Rick

You're not going to believe this one.

I went to the HP site to check on possible driver updates and was shocked to discover that my printer does not support Win8.

HP states there will be a driver available for it in late December.

I hope they were referring to 2012.

fredf447,

Check the firewall settings in your virus program and firewall.

Fred,

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs from the queue.

Make sure the printer is not usb cable connected.

Hit the Windows key and the x keys at the same time, programs and features, your HP Printer, uninstall.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

This will give you a clean start with installing the printer.

I would try the Vista drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode

Seems my screen capture didn't make it through.

This is what you see if you follow the links:

"HP is committed to providing the best product experience for the Windows 8 operating system.

Today, a solution for your printer is not available for Windows 8. However, a driver update will be available in late 2012.

HP aspires to provide the most up-to-date information on HP drivers and software. Please check back for updates."

Your printer is compatible with windows 8 according to MS win 8 compatibility site. Try using the win 7 driver until the win 8 driver is available.

Hi, just read this post and although HP has not yet fixed this, I managed to install it using a TP Link print server (TL-PS110U).

Created a new printer, as standard TCP/IP using the IP address for the print server, not autodetecting the model and selected as RAW (port 9100) and selected drivers for the HP Laserjet 1022 Series.

Best of luck!
