OS Recover Tool/ISO Image Error

Hi,

I'm trying to burn a USB flash drive with Windows 7 installation using "Dell OS Recovery Tool", and I get an error when it tries to write to the USB drive: "Sorry. An error occurred while extracting image file *.iso. Please check the file and try again"

I've tried several times, including deleting the *.iso file in the Downloads/Dell folder and re-downloading the image. I get this error every time.

I also tried using 3d party ISO burner software, and get an error as well.

OS is Windows 7, and the USB is 16GB.

Any help appreciated.

Hi sstreicher,

Thanks for posting.

Here is some information some users have found helpful:  http://dell.to/2xsXvhT

Thanks Robert. I was able to program the usb flash drive using the Rufus utility as recommended in that link. But I haven't tested it yet to verify it's correct.

I don't get it. There's nothing about Rufus in the attached, and why would I need to make a bootable drive when the Dell tool is doing that?

This is an old thread but I run into exactly the same problem, so for future users running into the same problem :

1) It seems that the program cannot format and use the usb drive correctly (lack of permissions) .

2) Right clicking on the shortcut and Run As Administrator seems to solve the problem .

Updating the Dell OS Recovery Tool helped for me, go to the dell website, put the service tag number again and download the tool right at the bottom of the page

Thank you very much for posting this fix for this problem.  It saved me some seriously valuable weekend time.

And this software should really be fixed so this solution isn't even necessary.  Just simply having it force you to open it as an Administrator (approving it) would avoid so much frustration.  Otherwise, it's completely useless.

Running the tool by default request admin rights. That may have changed since the March 2018 post.

However, it still gives the error after verifying the image and when trying to burn to USB drive. Tried using multiple drives that can be imaged with Rufus.

Same for me today with Dell XPS 15 9550.  Running with Admin privileges doesn't change the outcome.  Fails on the extract to USB.

Doesn't surprise me - I've tried a number of create-bootable-usb utilities over time and have routinely had config issues that required way too much technical knowledge to configure the available burn options to get them to work reliably for a given situation (or, in Dell's case - don't have options and just fall in a heap if the tool encounters something unexpected).

What worked for me - I reverted to using Rufus:

The Dell tool has probably downloaded the .iso file into a Dell subdirectory within your Downloads folder.

i.e. something like C|D:\Users\\Downloads\Dell \9663HA00_W10x64ROW_home(DL)_v3_20180528-0724.iso with whatever iso name applies to your situation.

Then, download Rufus - it's free - at rufus dot akeo dot ie

Choose your preferred USB in the "Device" drop-down, and then point it to your Dell .iso file via the "create a bootable disk using" + "ISO Image" checkbox option in the bottom half of the main window.

Click Start, and if you're moderately lucky, you should be set.  I've used it in the past for Win7 Lenovo and also Win10 Dell and haven't had to change any options to get it to work, so that's something, though ymmv.

Cheers,

JD

Thank you so much!
This solution solved my problem.

Just run as administrator. I downloaded the latest recovery tool 30th May 2018.

I ran the OS recovery tool at least 4 times, including once as admin, and it still threw the error.  I have local admin rights on my laptop and still no joy.  I had the most recent version of the tool as i downloaded it just 2 days ago and still nothing but error after error.  Using Rufus, stopped me from calling Dell and giving them a piece of my mind.  Now I can get on with recovering my old laptop and repurposing it. JD THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!
