Roxio Creator DE 10.2 and disc imaging.
Dell Inspiron 1545, Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. Came with Creator DE10.1 installed. Updated to 10.2 thru the DE update program. It also updated the Roxio Software Manager.
Question about making a disc image. In the project pane, on the left side, of the program, If I click the Data and Backup project, the project pane expands and the pane to the right shows "Data Disc". Underneath "Data Disc, the description is as follows: "Easily create a data CD or DVD or save a disc image to your hard drive." To the right of this is a box titled "Data Tutorials". One of the links here is "Save a disc image file". If I click this link, I am taken to the online Roxio Tutorials page titled "Save a Data Disc project as a disc image file. The Step-by-Step instructions are as follows:
1. Open a new or saved Data Disc project.
2. Select Browse from the Destination Selection drop down menu. A Save-As window appears.
3. Select a destination for the disc image file, and give it a meaningful name. Select a file type from the Save as Type drop down list.
4. Click the Save button, the Save As window closes.
5. Click the action button to begin creating your disc image file.
My problem is with step 2.
When I check New Project, there isn't a Browse button under Destination Selection. My CD/DVD combo drive is selected and there isn't a way to change it to save an image file to the hard drive.
Am I missing something, and if so can someone please what I should do to save files as a disc image?
Thanks

It could well be it isn't available. Dell's Roxio isn't the full retail version you buy in the stores.

ieee488,
Thanks for the reply. I realize that Creator DE isn't the full retail version. But it appears that a disc image can be made by burning the files to a disc, then writing the image file to the hard drive, then burning a new disc with the image file. And if my original scenario isn't possible, then I would think that the directions in the Data Disc project window wouldn't say "to save this project as a disc image, select a hard drive for the destination". It should have been left out, just as the DVD burning capabilities of the retail version of were left out.
Even the Easy CD creator 5.1 that came on the Dimension I bought in 2002 would let you create a disc image directly to the hard drive.
I posted here before attempting Roxio support because it has been my experience that all they, or any software mfg. supplying their program to a computer mfg. will say is that the computer mfg. is responsible for the support of the OEM version. And because there are people here who are very familiar with the Roxio programs.
So if anyone knows if Creator DE10.2 can create a disc image directly to the hard drive without first having to burn the files to a disc, then create the image file from the disc to the hard drive, then burn another disc with the image file, I would appreciate the help.
Thanks

You've got to have a full version to do most anything with Roxio. I got tired of the OEM version and bought a full version.

I appreciate the reply. And, once again, I know it isn't the full retail version. If that had been the original question, it would have been answered by ieee488. And if I ever need the program to do more, I will buy a full retail version. I did that (Easy Media Creator 7) to put on the XP machine I bought in 2002. I am simply asking if anyone knows why, when I am in the Data Disc project, the Destination Selection at the bottom of the Data project window won't allow me to change the destination? It is locked on the E drive (the CD/DVD), and the down arrow that is supposed to be there so it can be changed to an alternate destination, like the hard drive so a disc image can be created without first having to burn files to a CD/DVD, then create a disc image to the hard drive from the burned CD/DVD, then burn another CD/DVD with the disc image on it, isn't there.
Additional info:
On the Roxio Support site I found this kb article:
Patch for Roxio Dell 10
Knowledgebase Article : 000069GN |
Print this Article
Issue
Information about the Roxio Dell 10 patch.
Resolution
For Roxio Dell 10 users only.
The Roxio Dell 10 patch has been created to resolve issues for all version of Roxio Dell 10. This patch will not work for retail, boxed, or other bundled versions of Easy Media Creator (including prior versions).
Please read before downloading:

Since the kb article doesn't say what issues the patch resolves, is there anyone out there who is familiar with this and can shed some light on what the patch actually resolves?
Thanks.

I still have a copy of Roxio creator 10 on my computer and I tried it and it works just fine. If I was you and had a copy of it, I would uninstall it and then reinstall and do the updates. I think I have all the updates and mine works ok on the disk image and browse button. When you open Roxio up go to help on top of the window and click on help and then on update and see if it will update and then try it. I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium too but I've got SP3 downloaded. When you open Roxio on the left side click on Data and backup and at the top click on make bootable and then a window will open and the browse button will be there.

I don't think Roxio Creator 10 and Roxio Creator DE 10.x are the same thing. Creator 10 is, I believe, the full, retail version. Creator DE 10.x is the less featured version created for Dell by Roxio and included with Dell computers.
If you re-read my first post, you will see that I did update the program from 10.1 to 10.2. That still did not solve the problem of no drop down arrow or browse button in the Destination Selection section of the Data Disc window.
If I click the Make Bootable button at the top of the Data Disc window, a new window does open up, with a browse button, but it is to select the location of the bootable image you want to use, not to select the destination for a disc image you want to create.
And where did you find a SP3 for Vista Home Premium? The most recent thing that the Microsoft Vista site lists is SP2. At least that's the most recent SP I can find.
Thanks

Sorry it is SP2.I have a copy of Creator DE 10.2 that came on my computer. I've got it set to run in Windows XP SP3 mode. I tried that on my copy and it won't let me select a destination either. It's got the drive letter E which will burn it to disk. I don't know why. I will try and figure it out for you if I can.

I hope this works. Open your Roxio and click on data and backup. Underneath that click on data disk. At the top click add data and there will be a drop down that asks to add files or folders, click on what you want to add. Then down at the bottom right beside new project click on save. Now it will let you save it where you want to. Good luck

Thanks for the try. The Save button at the bottom of the Data Disc window will let you save the project where you want to. But it will only let you save it as a Dataxxxxxxxx.Roxio file. It won't let you change the file type to an image file(.gi or .iso).

I have Creator DE 10.3, with both of Dell Patches applied, and I have the same problem with not being able to "Browse" a destination selection.

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to let you are all know that is am using Roxio 10.3 and I was trying to copy and XP image on a windows 7 laptop. You have to use the copy function and it writes the files to a store location(temp). It than will pop out the disk and ask you for a blank one to copy the files to. Good luck.
