2161DS serial setup problems

Hello -

I want to assign an IP address to my 2161DS but am unable to get a serial connection.
Using the same laptop (HyperTerminal and COM1) I was able to set the IP address for the
TopSpin as well as the DRAC/MC so I know that those are good. In response to hitting
enter I just get tildes (~) back at 9600. When I try other baud rates I get different
characters. Does this sound like a bad serial port?

Thanks for any help,
Debbie

It turns out that we have the 189AS and not the 2161DS, so no IP to be set.

FTR I didn't spec out the equipment, place the order or do the unpacking
so had just assumed which one we had. And Dell doesn't put the model #
on the device in a way that's meaningful for us non-Dell folks to read.
Oh well ...

Do you mean that you have the 180AS model?  I am considering this model.  How do you like yours???

Yes, I did mean the 180AS, not 189 (the device has 189 on it actually as the Dell number).

We've decided to change it out for the 2161DS since the KVM-over-IP feature would be more
useful for us. But otherwise it's a nice device. We have another Avocent KVM so are already
familiar with the interface and usage.

Good luck,
Debbie

Do you like the 2161DS?  I've seen a number of posts on this forum that point to problems.

We don't have a 2161D (yet), but have an Avocent (not from Dell) KVM with the KVM-over-IP feature and like it quite alot. However it is slow the double mouse pointer thing is weird to use (I've found that assigning different symbols helps). I'm hoping that the 2161D will be like the 180AS (in it's simplicity of tiering, etc) and the KVM-over-IP feature as useful as our other one (it really does help at times to not have to go to the server room for some things).

Ask me again in a few weeks and I'll give you a review of the 2161DS,
Debbie

The serial port should work properly. You might want to connect using Hyperterminal and restart the switch as it is goes through the start up memory process. Also, try another COM port.
