Hello

I suspect they are wanting you to use the SSD as read cache. That is unlikely to resolve your performance issues. Your performance issues are caused by the choice of RAID controller, RAID level, and disks. Here is an article about parity RAID on controllers without cache.

https://www.dell.com/support/article/sln164091/

You are likely to see better performance upgrading to an H730 or H730P than adding an SSD read cache drive. The SSD read cache is still going to be bottlenecked by the controller. Since the controller does not have cache to allow staging of requests it will pause all I/O while it processes.

Better performance disks, better performance RAID level, and a read cache drive will all increase performance, but I think the biggest performance gain will be with a controller upgrade. All other upgrades will still be bottlenecked by the controller.

To answer your questions:

  1. We do not support non-Dell drives on our PERCs, but we do not block non-Dell drives. Whether or not they work will be trial and error on your part. We also do not sell drive carriers by themselves. They are sold along with the drive as a kit.
  2. Yes, the H330 supports non-RAID drives. The H730 supports non-RAID and single drive RAID 0's.
  3. No, there is no option to remove hot-swap
  4. You just add the drive and set it as non-RAID or single drive RAID 0 in the controller BIOS or one of our management applications that allow storage configuration

Hi Daniel

Apologies for not replying any sooner.

Thanks for the advise on upgrading the PERC. We will be trying to do this one first before adding any SSDs.

Do you have any guides or articles on changing the hardware of the perc and reconfiguring these in a RAID5 setup?

Also, does changing the hardware cause data loss? How can eliminate this one?

Hi technically no such restrictions or limitations to import non-boot disks from low end to high end controllers. In this case RAID disks configured from H330 to H730 or H740 controller.
