Dell Poweredge R810 - SYSTEM HALTED WITH 128000 DIMM

Hi Team,

I have Dell Poweredge R810 server with Two CPU'S ( E7540). When i had purchased it before four years ago, it came along with 128 GB RAM (8GB*16) and specification as below-

Hynix - 8Gb 2R*4 PC3 - 10600R  HMT31GR7AFR4C-H9 D7 AB

16 DIMM slots are being used as there are dummy ram are fitted into rest of 16 slots because there are only 2 CPU's present and  It was working fine with above specified DIMM.

Now i need to upgrade my server to 256 GB RAM with all exiting configuration hence i have purchased 16GB *16 DIMM but when i tried with this, i was getting error message like "MEMORY IS NOT DETECTED "" SYSTEM HALTED"

New Ram specification -

16GB 2R*4 PC3 - 12800R -11-11-E2-P2

PART NUMBER - 672309-581

Could you please anyone help me here to fix this issue with proper RAM specification?

Whether this new RAM’s are not compatible with processor or with motherboard, if not then what would be solution for this? Please provide me details of compatible DIMM with part numbers.

Your help would be really appreciated.

Regards,

Rahul

Hi Rahul,

1. The R810 doesn't support 4x 130 W Intel Xeon processor 7500 series CPUs, so you cannot add more of the same. This is explained on page 5 here: http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r810_user%27s%20guide4_en-us.pdf Page 5 also lists CPUs supported in quantities of 2 or 4. These are all non-Nehalem processors and should support 16GB DIMMs, but you should check each one to make sure.

2. The X5550 is not supported.

3. The R810 only supports RDIMMs running at 1067 MHz. PC3-8500 runs at 1066 MHz, so it would be supported. Anything above this (PC3-12800 runs at 1600 MHz) would theoretically slow down to 1067 MHz. However, DIMMs of higher speeds are not validated to work in the R810 at all. I recommend only buying RAM validated by Dell to work on this system. Dell does not guarantee all DIMMs of a certain type, size, or speed will work in our systems.

4. PC3-12800/PC3-12800R is not supported on the R810, regardless of which CPU is used, for the reasons above.

Page 5 of the above guide explains R810 rules on multiple processors, mixing processors, memory capacity, power supply requirements, OS requirements, etc. All of these factors need to be considered before purchasing and upgrading your hardware.

This sales page has supported R810 parts available from Dell right now: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/poweredge-r810/upgrade

Regarding daphco's post (https://www.dell.com/community/PowerEdge-Hardware-General/R810-unsupported-DIMM/m-p/6043016#M55542), the CPU and other factors aren't specified, so I can't speculate on whether this would work for you. I recommend keeping the BIOS updated. You can download version 2.10.0 here: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=DXG4C

Thanks,

Hi Rahul,

Could you private message the service tag? This will give us a more complete look at the server. To be clear, you're removing the 128GB (8*16) DIMMs and replacing them with the 256GB (16*16) configuration, correct?

Thank you,

Hello Trish,

Service Tag : (removed by moderator)

Your understanding is correct. I want to upgrade it with  memory 256 GB. As i have already mentioned that, i purchased 16GB *16 DIMM's and it is not working in R810 server.

kindly check and let me know how to fix this issue.

Regards,

Rahul

Hi Rahul,

There are a couple of compatibility issues here. First, although the R810 itself supports 16GB DIMMs, Intel Nehalem CPUs do not, and the Xeon E7540 falls into this category. This Intel guide to the E7540 specifies codename Nehalem: https://ark.intel.com/products/46492/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E7540-18M-Cache-2_00-GHz-6_40-GTs-Intel-QPI

Second, the R810 only supports up to 128GB memory in 2x CPU configurations. Memory expansion would require adding more CPUs. The matrix on page 102 of this guide shows supported CPU/memory configurations: http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r810_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf

If you wanted to continue installing your 16GB DIMMs for a total of 256GB, you'd have to replace both CPUs (to support 16GB), then add 2 more CPUs for a total of 4. The CPUs currently installed will only support up to 8GB DIMMs.

Thank you,

Hey Trish,

Thanks for your quick response !!

Assuming that R810 with CPU's E7540  does not support 16 GB DIMM's as there is restriction at processor level but R810 will support 16 GB DIMM's when we will use processor which would be support to 16 GB RAM modules.

1. Could you please  tell me  processors list which  will supports in R810 with 16 GB DIMM's?

2. As i have two E7540 CPU's in place which supports only 8 GB RAM modules , so can we put two different CPU's along with existing one like X5550 or something like that.

3. Does any Memory frequency restriction there while purchasing new DIMM's for R810, i heard that R810 does not supports 12800R Ram modules,  is it true ? infact i had purchased SAMSUNG 16 GB * 16 sticks with 12800R which is not being used anywhere.

4.  I believe, there is no any restriction of using 16 GB DIMM's with 12800R  at mother board level in R810, its an CPU's issue.

Dhanesh

Hi Trish,

Please check this link : https://www.dell.com/community/PowerEdge-Hardware-General/R810-unsupported-DIMM/m-p/6043016#M55542

where user was saying that 16 GB dimm's worked but that was with bios version 1.2 not with latest one.

any thoughts on this would be really apprecited  !!

Hi Trish,

Thank you so much for answering all my questions in detail.

Almost all question got answered but still want to know below things for knowledge purpose.

1. I'm planning to purchase 2x E7-8867L CPU's for R810 then only i can upgrade it with 256 GB RAM.  But still i need to replace RAM(12800R)  sticks which i am currently holding as you said, it will not be supported in R810 even though CPU been changed to non Nehalem.

2. until i changed current CPU's, i can't upgrade H/W to 256 GB RAM with 16 DIMM's slot and 2 CPU's , as currently i have 2xE7540 CPU's and those are not supported 16 GB DIMM's whether its 8500R or 12800R so could not upgrade it more than 128 GB RAM right?

3. 12800R is supporting to R710 with X5550 CPU's, Isn't it strange? However, its older version compare to R810.

Rahul

Hi Rahul,

1. Simply changing CPUs will not allow 256GB of RAM, because there are still only 2x CPUs. The R810 supports up to 128GB memory in 2x CPU configurations, regardless of CPU type.

2. Partially correct. Changing CPUs from E7540 to E7-8867L (non-Nehalem) only adds 16GB DIMM support, but with 2x CPUs your memory capacity is still 128GB. Increasing memory capacity to 256GB would require 4x CPUs.

3. R710 supports up to 1333 MHz DIMMs (PC3-10600). I'm unsure of exact release dates, but R710 and R810 are of the same PowerEdge generation (11th gen).

Since you're upgrading to 2x E7-8867L, I encourage you to read through this manual on the Xeon E7-2800/4800/8800 product family: http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-r810_user%27s%20guide4_en-us.pdf The bottom of page 5 has important info regarding BIOS settings and firmware updates required for these to work. There's also a note to update the BIOS with 7500 series CPU installed before replacing with Xeon E7-8800 series.
