R210 II BMC upgrade error: USB Device is not found

Hi,

I have a lot of R210 II server with and without iDRAC modules.
* For server with iDRAC no problem.
ESM_Firmware_9GJYW_LN32_2.90_A00.BIN
Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_Application_0WFGM_LN_1.7.5.4_A00.BIN
* But for server without the iDRAC module I'm looking to upgrade the BMC without success at this point.

So for server without the iDRAC:

[root@R210IIFirm src]# /opt/dell/srvadmin/sbin/omreport system summary | grep -A2 "Firmware Information"
Firmware Information <== (well in this server is the version it's already the version I have with the file bu I got several others versions: 1.92.00 (Build 1) / 1.90.00 (Built 4) / version 1.85.00 (build 2) / 1.80.00 (Build 1) / 1.70.00 (Build 6) ).
Name : Baseboard Management Controller
Version : 1.95.00 (Build 1)
--
Firmware Information
Name : Unified Server Configurator
Version : 1.5.5.18

* Look like BMC is not supported by DSU (USC yes):
[-]1 Dell 32 Bit Diagnostics
Current Version : 5162A0 same as : 5162A0, Criticality : Optional, Type : Application

[-]2 Dell Unified Server Configurator, 1.5.5.18, A00
Current Version : 1.5.5.18 same as : 1.5.5.18, Criticality : Optional, Type : Application

[-]3 PERC H200A Controller 0 Firmware
Current Version : 07.03.06.00 same as : 07.03.06.00, Criticality : Recommended, Type : Firmware

[-]4 BIOS
Current Version : 2.9.0 same as : 2.9.0, Criticality : Urgent, Type : BIOS

* On web site only old version are available:
Dell BMC Firmware, v.1.70, A01 // 27 May 2013 (OLD)
wget https://downloads.dell.com/esm/PER210II_BMC_FRMW_LX_R300562.BIN

Dell Unified Server Configurator, v.1.5.0.29, A00 // 11 Sep 2014 (OLD)
wget https://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER80094M/1/USC_APP_LX_R296664.BIN

* But in the SmartBootableISO_2018-06-11_15-34-28 file: https://dell.app.box.com/v/BootableR210II/file/297719582076

I found the correct version for BMC (Even if the name look like iDRAC version):
./FOLDER01284137M/1/ESM_Firmware_F4D3G_LN32_1.95_A00.BIN
./FOLDER00496839M/5/Lifecycle-Controller_Application_YV2KT_LN32_1.5.5.18_A00.BIN

The exec is working fine but a got an USB error:

Hello

If you only have a BMC then you can only install BMC firmware and the USC. If you have an iDRAC installed then you install the iDRAC firmware and LCC firmware.

The 1.95 firmware and LCC you are trying to install are for systems with an iDRAC. The labeling as a BMC on the download page can cause confusion. The iDRAC takes over as the BMC, so the iDRAC is still referred to as a BMC by some. We make the distinction between iDRAC and BMC clear in most of our documentation and downloads. This is the first time I've seen an iDRAC download referred to as a BMC download. I verified that the update is for an iDRAC, the package configuration file runs a check to make sure an iDRAC is installed before it will run the update. 1.7 is the latest version of the BMC that I show on the website.

Thanks

Hi Daniel,

I pretty sure is not exactly this, let me explain with more details:

I'm using this command: /opt/dell/srvadmin/sbin/omreport system summary | grep -A2 "Firmware Information"
to see if server is iDRAC or BMC.

----------------------------------------
R210 II with iDRAC:

Firmware Information
Name : iDRAC6
Version : 2.90.00.00 (Build 4)

Firmware Information
Name : Lifecycle Controller
Version : 1.7.5.4

Files used for the upgrade:
iDRAC Monolitich Realease 2.90 // 25 Jul 2017
https://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER04448397M/1/ESM_Firmware_9GJYW_LN32_2.90_A00.BIN

Logs:
The version of this Update Package is newer than the currently installed version.
Software application name: iDRAC6
Package version: 2.90
Installed version: 1.90

Dell lifecycle Controller v1.7.5 // 09 Mar 2016
https://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER02971948M/1/Lifecycle-Controller_Legacy_Application_0WFGM_LN_1.7.5.4_A00.BIN

Logs:
Software application name: Dell Lifecycle Controller, 1.5.5.27, A00
Package version: 1.7.5.4
Installed version: 1.5.5.27

Those packages launched on a BMC server just tell platform not compatible.

Same error but platform compatible.

On the CD: SmartBootableISO_2018-06-11_15-34-28.iso
(I now! the name of files are especially red herring but read the text lower here).

bash ./FOLDER01284137M/1/ESM_Firmware_F4D3G_LN32_1.95_A00.BIN
BMC Firmware
The version of this Update Package is the same as the currently installed version.

Dell Unified Server Configurator, 1.5.5.18, A00

The version of this Update Package is the same as the currently installed version.
Software application name: Dell Unified Server Configurator, 1.5.5.18, A00
Package version: 1.5.5.18
Installed version: 1.5.5.18

It's why I'm thinking I'm using the right file version.
And why I'm asking how to solve the USB error.

Best regards

Hi Daniel,

I have more informations:
=====
Tested under windows 2012R2 with SUU-WIN32_17.12.200.229.ISO :
Lifecycle-Controller Application MRT8N WIN32 1.6.5.8 A00 / Dell Unified Configurator, 1.5.5.18, A00 / Current 1.5.5.18 / Latest 1.6.5.8

This upgrade too work fine under windows:
ESM_Firmware_F4D3G_WN32_1.95_A00

And after the upgrade under linux:
Firmware Information
Name : Baseboard Management Controller
Version : 1.95.00 (Build 1)
--
Firmware Information
Name : Unified Server Configurator
Version : 1.6.5.8
=====
Using this CD: SmartBootableISO_2018-06-11_15-34-28 file: https://dell.app.box.com/v/BootableR210II/file/297719582076

BMC Firmware, 1.95, A00 // February 08, 2013
./FOLDER01284137M/1/ESM_Firmware_F4D3G_LN32_1.95_A00.BIN

Unified Server Configurator, 1.5.5.18, A00 // May 07, 2012

./drm_files_repository/System Bundle (linux)PER210 II v652/ESM_Firmware_F4D3G_LN32_1.95_A00.BIN

=> So even if the file are named in the same way the aim platform in not the same.
=====

I'm now able to upgrade the USC from windows and linux to:
 Unified Server Configurator, 1.6.5.8, A00 // April 11, 2014

I'm now able to upgrade BMC under windows to:
Unified Server Configurator, 1.5.5.18, A00

=> So I'm first question is the same how to upgrade the BMC from linux!?
(File is really really really probably the good one, same name as windows one
ESM_Firmware_F4D3G_WN32_1.95_A00
ESM_Firmware_F4D3G_LN32_1.95_A00.BIN).

Additionally question, I got an R210II with USC version 1.6.5.11 at this point I dunno where to found this file version...

Best regards
Vince
