R410 SAS Offline

Greetings, First of all, I am not experienced in SAS drives or PERC controllers.  Our server guy left for other ventures and I am working through an issue.  This is an R410 with 2ea 300 GB SAS drives.  Some time ago we had to separate the RAID based on our accounting software QB recommendation.  They won't support it.  The guy we had took care of the issue, I thought.  I was about to purchase a new drive and found that he simply unplugged the drive cable from the server.  I would like to use this drive as a separate drive and not used in the RAID.

Currently, the drive is plugged in and with in the server 2012, the drive displays as being offline and a read only check mark in files storage\volums\disks.

How can I ensure this is separated from the RAID?  I would like to reformat that drive.

I realize I am a newbie but I would appreciate any assistance or direction.

Thank you for the service tag.

I show the system was sold with an S300 RAID controller. You should be able to set the drives to a non-RAID state. Before doing anything I would suggest reviewing the current configuration. You can install OpenManage Server Administrator to gather information on the storage configuration. Dell EMC OpenManage Server Administrator Managed Node is available for download from the R410 support page>Drivers and downloads>Systems Management.

https://www.dell.com/support/home/product-support/product/poweredge-r410/

If you add a drive to the controller and configure it as non-RAID you will then need to use disk management utilities within the operating system to initialize, format, and assign a drive letter. You can reference the S300 storage controller manual for more information.

Thanks

Dan,

Something interesting. After I installed the openmanager software, under storage, there is "No storage controllers detected".  I will have to take the cover off and determine where those cables are connected too.  I am sure it is still like it was when we bought it.  In fact, I would not think the drive would work without having the controller in place.

When I checked the "Set Hot Spare Protection Policy" I see all of the different RAID levels but none of which are selected.

Does this mean that the previous gentleman disabled it like he said?

That makes it difficult for me to know if I enable the drive or "Bring Online" what it will do. I just can't have it over riding the data on drive "0".

The system should be restarted after installing OMSA. It may not report correctly without a restart. If you still do not see storage devices after a restart then check the hardware inventory. There should be a section of OMSA that will allow you to see attached hardware like PCIe devices. Check to see if the S300 is installed. If you are still unable to determine if the S300 is installed or being used then you may need to perform the visual inspection.

The S300 has a BIOS interface that you can enter during boot. An option to enter the S300 BIOS should show on the screen, I think the key command is CTL R. The S300 BIOS is another location to check the status of a virtual disk or drive.

Thanks
