R630 dual cpu optimal memory

We have a used R630 dual cpu server with 64gb (qty 4 2rx4 pc4-2133 modules)

If I understand the R630 memory config chart correctly, the optimal memory config for 64gb is qty 8 8gb or qty 16 4gb.

I'm in the process of purchasing some spare memory.  It looks like my current memory config is NOT optimal.  Server runs fine.

Please advise.

Hello

A maximum performance configuration would likely be 8 or 16 total modules, 4/8 for each lane. The R630 has 4 memory channels. For maximum performance you would want to utilize all four channels. Populating memory modules in slots 1,2,3,4 would put a single module in each channel(0,1,2,3). If you put a second set of modules in 5,6,7,8 then that would be two modules in each channel. You would want to stop there because if modules are populated in 9,10,11,12 it will reduce the memory speed to a maximum of either 2133 or 1866, depending on the type of modules used.

You should be able to locate a diagram of the memory layout in the manual or on the chassis cover. We usually put a label on the inside of the top cover with diagrams.

If I were deciding between 8x8GB, 4 on each lane, and 16x4GB, 8 on each lane, I would choose 8x8GB. Larger modules that are utilizing all of the channels would be better for performance than two sets of smaller modules. Realistically, you probably will not notice a  difference in performance with either choice.

Thanks
