R720 fan speed
Hi,
when first setup my r720 and put the System Mode to Performance per Watt the system was pretty quiet, the fans where running at 1200umin with less workload.
Afterwards I played a bit with custom system modes or performance mode, ending in 12000umin fan speed all the time, no matter what's the temperature.
I put the mode back to Performance per Watt, but the system is keep running with 12000umin, and a temperature of max 30°.
Any idea how I can slow down the fans, or get back to the old behavior where the system was pretty quiet?
Best regards,
Fabian

Hi Chris,
I simply run the following command using SSH on the idrac:
> racadm set system.thermalsettings.FanSpeedOffset 0
This fixed the problem, the fan's are always quiet, now.
Best regards,
Fabian

Fabian1233,
To start would you confirm what versions your BIOS and iDrac are at currently, as well as the model Processor installed?
Let me know, as your answers will dictate the direction we need to go.
Thanks.

Hi Chris,
thanks for your reply. I'm running on:
Beside it's running iDRAC 7 and confirms no updates are available.
Best regards,

Thank you. The fan speed increase to maximum RPMs is working as designed for some processor models, which is required to ensure the long term reliability of those processors. Now for most of the System profile BIOS options, C1E is enabled. Now if the Performance profile is selected, C1E is automatically disabled and cannot be enabled. If the C1E disable feature is not needed, use the Custom profile and enable C1E.
Then let me know if that resolves the fan rpm issue.

I run the following command, and get back to 20% fan speed:
> racadm set system.thermalsettings.FanSpeedOffset 255
The power consume dropped from 190watt to 110watt, just because the fans are slower, while the cpu's temperature is going up by 3 degree in average.

Hi,
Great fix it certainly quiets down my R720, the fans still ramp up when it gets hot but do not run at full blast from the get-go.
However, every time it reboots the fan control reverts to the standard scheme which is full-power.
Is there a way to issue this command above, at boot?

Hi, thanks for choosing Dell. At this point I believe it's best to have answers from the previous commentators. Also Dell does not have the official guide on offsetting fan on 11 severs so there's nothing much I can comment on. Folks seems to try out. But please know less fanning means higher temperature, which isn't recommended. I'm wondering if you could run command at all but I can't say. Sorry I can't be of help this time. Wish you a good one.

You can SSH to iDRAC IP and run the racadm command

Hello the original post goes way back- could you please state in detail as to what kind of issue you were going through and what was done? That would be much appreciated for troubleshooting.
Thank you and have a great one!
