boot does not complete
I have a Dell PowewrEdge R440 which has been running VMWare for about 6 months. I just attempted to upgrade the UPS to an APC Back-UPS 1500. The boot process hangs during the idrac initialization. Removing the UPS makes the problem go away. Is there anything I can do which would allow me to use the APC?

Hi k3pto,
that sounds strange to me. Is there any difference between the old UPS and the APC one?
It is just the power cable that's plugged in the UPS right?
Do you see error messages in the iDRAC log? Anything that gives a clue about the issue?
I don't know what to say, but if the system works fine w/o the UPS and also with the old one, and now brings errors with the new one - I guess it's somehow related to the APC UPS and not to the server itself.
I also don't know the UPS are there any specific parameters - but why should it affect the POST and boot process of this system.
If you have some more information, error messages or so, let me know.
Best regards
Stefan

HI Josh,
I have not. I could try this weekend - I do not want to take the server down during the week since it is being used almost all day. Are you thinking one of the power supplies has a problem?

Have you tried a single power cable?

HI Stefan,
Thanks for the quick reply. The old UPS is also an APC unit but with lower power capability. My guess is that the new unit is generating noise that is picked up by the R440. I do not know how to access the iDRAC log yet. Until now, I did not have a "need to know."
I may take my oscilloscope to the UPS and look at the waveform coming from the outlets.

Hi again,
I forgot to respond to your first question - yes, only the two power cords (redundant power supplies) from the PC were plugged into the UPS.

It could be, or a cable, maybe the APC, but should try to rule out other things first.
