Bandwidth requirement calculation

Hi All,

In our environment we are using MS Exchange 2007, File server and SAP, we would like to replicate them using RecoverPoint or MirrorView. The distance between the sites is around 30-35kms and we need Asynchronous replication type. Can you guide us on what bandwidth/link would be required between both sites?

Any help or suggestions will be highly appreciated.

thansks and regards,

Samir

You would need to calculate how much data will change for each of the luns over any given time period.

After the initial sync only the changed blocks will be copied over.

So I would work out how much data changes over the busiest hour on the luns.

Convert this to Mb/s.

Its not a 100% accurate calculation but is should put you in the right ball park.

So for an example.

Lun 1 changes 1GB of data an hour

Lun 2 changes 2GB of data during the same hour

total data changed = 3 GB

Convert to MB,

3GB * 1024 = 3072MB

Convert the MB to Mb

3072*8 = 24576Mb

24576Mb is the amount of data changed in a hour on our luns, we need to convert this to the average per second.

24576 / (60*60) = 24576 / 3600 = 6.83 Mb/s

Samir,

EMC has a tool called BCSD ( Business Continuity Solution Designer) that we use to validate and size an environment. This tool uses perfmon/iostats or array statistics (EMC arrays) as an imput.  Contact your local EMC representative and they can help size the environment for you.  The tool will output the number or RPA's along with bandwidth required to meet an customer defined RPO.  Alternatively we have an excel based calculator that can be used for smaller environments that uses assumptions on avg/peak change rates to size.   I typically prefer sizing based on empirical data, i.e statistics, as this eliminates use of assumptions that relegates the sizing to be only as good as the assumptions.

Thanks Rick,

Is there any way we as a customer can calculate the amount of bandwidth required?

regards,

Samir

good afternoon,

I tried to do the approximate bandwidth with what I'm working with but the numbers are very high I could help make a table but with 3.5 TB:

Replica: ERP_DB        3.0 TB---------   GB: 3072

Replica: PeopleSoft     500 GB

Total en GB: 3572

Convert to MB:

3072 GB* 1024 =  3,657,728

Convert the MB to Mb:

3,657,728*8 = 29,261,824

Mb:

29,261,824/(60*60)= 29,261,824/3600= 8,128 Mb/s

Do you have access to RP Basic Sizer, the web based sizing app?

Rich
