RecoverPoint as an alternative to Double-Take

  Hi All,

We are looking to replace our current vendor "Double-Take" which we have deployed to very many client environments (We are a managed hosting data center, a very large one).

We've been having continous issues with stability with Double-Take from just finishing an initial mirror, continuing with ongoing real-time replication, and even when failing over to the DR site.

To try to get to the point:

Can RecoverPoint or EMC Replicator perform the same tasks as Double-Take? Specifically, we need the ability to protect (in realtime) entire operating systems and their states, and not just SAN disks or single applications.. Most of the network communication would occur over a site-to-site VPN (MPLS) connection to the DR data center.

Is this even possible with this product? I can't seem to find any specific mention of "Full Server" protection.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi,

RecoverPoint (RP) is a SAN disk replication product and not a direct equivalent to Double Take. However, you can achieve what you want as long as the OS disks and the data/application disks are stored on the SAN either by direct attach hosts or utilizing vmware. RP can provide near real time replication of the data subject to data change rates and available WAN bandwidth in the case of remote replications. It can provide real time/synchronous replication for local replication (i.e. within the same SAN or fabric). The compression technology included in RP makes it especially attractive for WAN deployments.

Typically a manual failover to the copy would be required although this can be automated in the case of VMWare by using Site Recovery Manager (SRM). The product is very stable works in general without issues (we have had all kinds of trouble with Double Take type products and have avoided them for the last few years). There are full integrations with common applications such as Exchange and SQL to ensure the database gets replicated in a consistent state.
