RecoverPoint for VMs and vCenter Appliance
Hello All,
Does anyone know if RecoverPoint for VMs been tested and/or support the vCenter appliance rather than the conventional vCenter server running on Windows?
I am trying to use RPforVMs with a appliance based vCenter server and whenever I click on the RP icons in the vCenter webclient or try to use any of the RP functions, the vCenter server gets crushed. Other functions stop working or take forever to respond. Of course, none of the RP functionality seems to work.
The console tab in the RP section of the webclient shows a bunch of null channel errors and failed urls. I have attached the log to this message for more information. I changed the name of the vcenter server for security reasons.
Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.
Thx!

Hi,
This doesn't look like the same issue, we have seen this issue (vRPA clusters not showing up on plugin) on several of installations and the root cause varies. Therefore, I would like to ask if the RP4VM plugin got pushed as part of Deployment Manager installation ? Also, can you verify that iSCSI paths (on the iSCSI SW adapter, paths between the ESX and the vRPA iSCSI vNICs) are alive ?.
Regards,
Idan

You can get the Plugin itself from the one the vRPAs by going to: https://(vRPA IP Address>/RPVWCPlugin.zip and extract it under C:\ProgramData\VMware\vSphere Web Client\vc-packages\vsphere-client-serenity\com.emc.recoverpoint.vwc-1.0.0. After doing so, restart the web client service.
That being said, if the plugin was pushed with DM then there's no need to do the above. The iSCSI paths issue you're describing above can be the root cause of the fact that vRPA clusters aren't visible through plugin. Can you check the vswitch/dvswitch assignment of the VMkernal ports used by iSCSI and the vRPA iSCSI vNICs ? also, make sure to check connectivity between the vRPAs and the iSCSI VMkernal ports by using the boxmgmt CLI interface (SSH to one of the vRPA LAN IP addresses using user/password boxmgmt), from the installation and deployment guide (p15):
To ping the Software iSCSI VMkernel ports from vRPA, login to boxmgmt and select
Diagnostics > Run Internal Command > ping -I eth2 (or eth3)
Hope that helps,
Idan

Hello,
yes the plugin was pushed by the deplyment manager.
I tried to install the plugin manually, but to be honest I don´t know how to do this.
But when I have a look on the iSCSI Ports, they always change from online to dead...
Is this a VMware problem or can this altough be an affect from the vRPA?

So why I right-click on a VM in the webclient and select protect, it opens the Protect VM Wizard. Then I select "Create a new consistency group for this VM" and click next. I enter in a new name for the consistency group. In the "Select the source vRPA cluster" box below I guess I have to select a vRPA cluster for the consistency group but no vRPA clusters are listed. The selection box is empty.
In the RecoverPoint for VMs plug-in page, there are no VMs listed under the protection tab.
See attached pics for more info...

Can you provide screenshots of the discovery info in the Target Tab under the iSCSI Software Adapter of each of the ESXi hosts in the ESXi HA cluster(s). Also, are you using vCenter Link Mode?

The symptom might be the same (vRPA clusters not showing up in plugin) but the cause might differ.
druehl and cyberlaz - can you verify the iSCSI paths status ? can you also attach screenshots of Storage > Storage Adapters > vmhbaX (iSCSI SW Adapter) > Paths and also Targets.
Thanks,
Idan
