RM 5.0.1: Windows 2003 VSS operation failed during CX snapshot creation
Hi,
While creating a CLARiiON LUN snapshot under Replication Manager 5.0.1, I got the following messages from the RM agent production server:
2007 04 26 09:54:15 srvphc 026094 ERROR: Storage Services operation CC_storageServicesInterface::executeReplication failed with an error as follows: DoSnapshotSet failed.
2007 04 26 09:54:15 srvphc 026084 ERROR: Storage Services operation processExecute failed with an error as follows: Storage Services has terminated with an error.
Looking into the Event Viewer I noticed the following message:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine DeviceIoControl(IOCTL_VOLUME_SET_GPT_ATTRIBUTES). hr = 0x800700aa. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
After digging server logs and process monitoring, I found out that the main reason for this problem was a resident filter of VERITAS BackupEXEC backup agent known as Volume Snapshot Provider Driver (from VERITAS Software).
To solve this problem I just had to upgrade this file:
- C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\VSP.SYS
This file version was v1.3.0.0, so I've upgraded it to v1.6.0.0.
I did this by upgrading VERITAS BackupEXEC backup agent from v9.1.4691.0 to v10.1.5629.0.
Hope this helps someone with a similar problem!
Best regards,
Celso Capao.

I have just technically approved the EMC KB solution (emc159873) for this actual problem for publishing and soon, it will be searchable on EMC powerlink to customers too!
Thanks
James.
