2nd HDD in Latitude 1720. Assistance please.

Hello and thanks in advance for any assistance you are able to lend.

I have an Inspiron 1720 with slots for two hard drives.  The first slot is taken by the primary HDD that came with the laptop.

I would like to add a 2nd HDD.  I have the mounting kit from Dell and have purchased a Fujitsu MHY2160BH 160GB HDD.

The system cannot recognize the 2nd HDD.  Dell states this is because the second drive is "set-up" as a primary HDD.  I understand not being able to have two primary HDD's, but how does one change a HDD from primary to secondary?

Back in the say there were dip switches or jumpers.  I cannot find any.

Suggestions please....

The primary and secondary drives are determined by the position - i.e., the outboard one is primary and the inboard one is secondary.  If the BIOS doesn't see the second drive, be sure the drive is enabled there.

Thanks for your reply.

The drive are in the correct bays.  The BIOS see the 2nd HDD.  When Vitsa (cringe) boots, it does not see the 2nd HDD.

Any other suggestions please?

The drive must be partitioned and formatted before Windows will see it.

Go to Control Panel>Administrative tools>Computer Management>Disk Management you should see your 2nd HDD in there. You can create the partition and format it. Hope this works for you.
