Added a SSD to my inspiron 518 desktop and having troubles

The SSD boots up with win 7 ok, I have a 500 gb drive that came with it. I formatted it only by plugging it in after win 7 booted up. do I need a jumper on the 500 gb drive cuz when both are plugged in it will not boot. If I boot up with the SSD and plug in the 500 then go in to drive management they both are there and healthy.
