Booting from USB - Inspiron 15-3521 Hard Drive crash and replacement

Hello, I am replacing my HD on my Inspiron 15-3521, warranty expired. Get "no boot device found" and when diagnostic run get error code 2000-0151.

I am going to attempt reinstall of Win 8.1 using a boot memory stick in USB.

Will the computer recognize the memory stick is installed and boot off of it or do I have to do something in boot settings (F12)?

If the system has secure boot turned on, that must be disabled.  Otherwise, the system should be able to boot from a USB flash drive by pressing F12 to bring up the boot menu.

So if I switch it to Legacy Boot, unsecured, it will hit the USB Drive, correct?

You should not need legacy boot as long as it's a set of Dell recovery media.

It is not Dell but MS Windows

Hi USAFRetired,

Sorry to ask such an obvious question, but have you tried booting in legacy mode? Do you know for sure this flash drive is bootable?

I want to wish you a happy Memorial Day and thank you for serving, I presume, in the Air Force!

UPDATE - Decided to go with a 240 gig Solid State Drive yesterday. Installed, switched to legacy boot and it booted fine off the USB. Reinstalled Win 8.1, got back on Mozy and restored all the files. Everything is running great - and WOW that SSD is FAST!
