Bus Speed for Sata HD for Inspirion

Anybody know the max transfer rate for a Sata HD in an Inspirion Studio 1747?

Looks like I have ti replace the Toshiba MK5056GSY 500GB drive. Is a Sata III a waste of money or will it accept 6GB/sec transfer rate?

Hi Over50rules,

The SATA controller supports 3 Gb/s but will work with an SATA III SSD. If you replace it with a mechanical drive, of course it makes no difference what the SATA controller and hard drive are.

O4: Thanks. I understand about backward compatibility. Is this Dell PC capable of a higher transfer rate or am I stuck with 3 GB/sec?

It's SATA II, so 3 Gb/s.

O4:  Thanks. Guess I will live with it awhile. $$ tight. Could not find that info anywhere in Dell stuff and they will not answer a simple question w/o money. Remind me again why I keep trying to buy American..........
