C600 Hardrive

What is the largest hard drive that the C600 can support ?

November 8th, 2005 21:00

Alright mate,

It works an absolute treat!!!!!!

Both the memory stick and massive hard drive has increased my Dell laptop by 200%.

Thank you so much.

For some reason the total capacity is 55.8GB instead of 60GB. Have you any idea why? Is it something to do with compression?

Cheers

Harddrive Mfrs use  1 billion bytes as a gigabyte, 10 to the ninth power; BUT a Gigabyte more correctly is 2 to the 30th power or 1.0737billion bytes. Divide 60 by 1.0737 and 55.8 gb is the result

Hi,

I'm guessing my Dell's only got a 1.0 USB speed, but if I was to put a USB 2.0 hub in that, would the USB hub ports still be 2.0 even though it's running through a USB 1.0? Ive been assuming that it will just be 1.0.

Also it looks like I have two spare slots next to my hard drive. Can you suggest anything i can put in there at all?

Cheers

Maybe a WiFi PCMCIA card. There are also USB 2.0 PCMCIA cards, but I am not sure they will support  that speed or the C600's native 1.1

Cool, with regards to compatibility with PCMCIA cards and my C600, would all types fit mine.  Shall I look for anything in particular when looking for a card?

Cheers

I never have used either, so I am in no position to give advice. I know they are for sale on Ebay, but that's about it. Perhaps someone else will chime in; if not, start a fresh thread on the subject, perhaps in one of the boards closer to the Modem and LAN cards genre

I had a PC133 SDRAM that wouldn't allow my Fujitsu to boot, so I swapped it in my C600.
There is now 512MB total from one Dell PC100 DIMM and one PC133 DIMM. It works without a problem, clearly there is some risk for us.

Now, I was wondering if the ATA100 interface drive will work with a C600.
I still want to get a 100 or 120 GB drive and have a newer C840 I could use it in if it failed to work.

Any thoughts on the C600 interface and any experience using big drives on a C600 ?

I've upgraded to 512MB RAM too.

ATA100 should be compatible and will work fine.

I've upgraded to a 60GB hard drive in my C600. All works a treat.

Not touching processor though, gonna leave it be. My laptop runs superbly with XP pro + anti virus installed.

Your ATA100 harddrive will work on your C600, but the board only supports ATA33, and that is what you will get. Johnallg(Diamond) and I had some discussions on his Inspiron 4000(same boards as the C600) Even with the Registry tweaked to enable ATA100, ATA33 was the best it would do. I am not sure this is true of the C640/Inspiron 4150 or the C610/Inspiron 4100; I have a C610 board at present and will try to find out and report on that one, or perhaps EdC will check in with his experience with his C610.

So back to the original.

Has anyone managed to get an 80, 100 or 120 GB drive to run in a C600 ?

My current 40 is booting intermittantly, so I need something pretty soon.

I am hoping at least an 80 will work and I am running the latest BIOS.

Thanks

Possibly a bit late for you, but in case it helps anyone else...

A few months ago, I replaced my C600's original Dell drive with an 80gb Samsung MP0804H. I was purely looking for the extra space, but I was delighted to also get a noticeable speed boost.

BTW, I had a false start with a 100gb Samsung drive (I can't remember it's type, but it was different from the 80gb as that's the max for that particular range). As soon as I powered that up, it asked me for a password. This was deeply puzzling for myself (and the store) as I had had to tear open the disk's bag and so it wasn't a return.

I now see from other posts in the forum that this is a known problem with the C600 for some disks types. Fortunately for me, this was the last 100gb the store had and so I ended up with the 80gb, which worked straight out of the box.

Regards,
Brian.
