CD/DVD drive will not open

When I go to the cd/dvd drive to insert a cd, nothing happens....it doesn't open.

The drive isn't listed on My Computer or in Device Manager--it seems to have vanished.

I've removed and reseated the cable connectors with no success.

There is a light indicating that there is power to it.........or does that mean some program is accessing it?

There are no upper or lower filters shown in the registry.

I'd appreciate any advice on what to do next.

Hi Marshal1934,

It's possible your drive is dead, or at least in the throes of death. I suggest you run the Dell diagnostics on your drive. There is a link in the CD/DVD FAQ (link below) to instructions on how to do this.

Hi Osprey4,

I ran the Dell diagnostics  Express Test and the Custom Test...........a CD/DVD drive didn't show up on any list.  It looks like I need to replace it(?).  How can I find out what to purchase as a replacement that would be compatible with my Inspiron 530?

Thx for your help with this.

You need an SATA drive for this system. It will be a direct out and in swap. Couldn't be any easier.

Here's a list of possible replacements from Newegg (if you're in the US).

I ordered an SATA LITE-ON DVD Writer Model iHAS224-06 from Newegg that I should receive in a couple of days.......I'll install it and let you know the results.

The drive arrived about an hour ago........installed easily (just as you said) and works fine.:emotion-2:

Once again, thanks for your guidance on this.
