CD/DVD not recognized - Inspiron B130

I have recently experienced troubles with my Inspiron B130 reading CDs. I typically just use the drive to read a software program that only works when the disc is in the drive. Lately when I pull up the program it tells me to enter the CD-ROM... which i have already done. At first, the problem could always be solved by taking out and replacing the disc, or simply restarting the computer... but now, It seems as if the computer is not registering the drive whatsoever.

If anyone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. If I have to run a diagnostic test (seems to be a common recommendation on these forums for similar problems...), can someone let me know the specific steps I need to take to do that?

Thanks,

Mark

When this happens, is the drive present in the Device Manager?

no where does it say DVD/CD-ROM drives. As i stated above, it does say Disk Drives and under that lists, as I said SAMSUNG HMO60HC... that's all I see. No DVD/CD-ROM listed.

Look in the Device Manager..........

Click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Post the brand and model of the drive.

The usual cause of this is a poor contact or connection.  Physically remove
the drive and inspect the contact/connection.  Reinstall the drive in an
effort to improve the connection.

The Samsung HMO60HC is the hard drive.  The optical drive will have its own listing.

How exactly should I remove/reconnect the drive? There is no easy access to it. It appears the only way may be to completely take off the shell of the computer. I've never done this with a lap top before...

I tried to unscrew every screw that I could see, but this still didn't give me enough access to fully open it up (I got it open a crack to look inside, but couldn't open it up any more without potential breaking something). Is there some trick to this that I'm missing?
