CDs not recognized - DVDs work fine

I have a Dell inspiron running Vista with a HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GSA-H73N ATA  DVD/CD ROM drive.

DVDs play with no problem.  CDs do not work.  Explore displays a blank screen.

I am unable to install new software or listen to music CDs.

I have ran windows diagnostics and checked for driver updates.

Thanks for your assistance.

Run the Dell Diagnostics on the drive.  The Diagnostics should be on
your hard drive.  Press F12 at startup while the blue Dell is on the
screen.  This will take you to the boot menu where the Utility Partition
or Diagnostics will be a choice.  Run the Custom Test for the drive
and have a data CD (not music CD) ready for the read test.

I ran the diagnostic with a data cd.  The response I received was "Does not contain any data tracks".  I also received Error Code: OFOO:281A

After, I put the same disk in another computer and the pictures poped up with no problem.

I have also removed Roxio software and removed the CDROM drivers with no success.  Any other ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks.

The error code indicates a drive failure.  It appears the CD laser
has failed while the DVD laser is still functioning.  It is time to
replace the drive.  If you are still within the warrenty, contact Dell
and they will send a replacement.
