DVD Burner for Dimension 4600

I have a Dimension 4600 that I would like to add a DVD burner to.  The present CD burner uses an IDE port.  However,  the motherboard shows two serial ATA ports.  Most of the new DVD burners I see are all serial ATA.  Can I use one of the serial ATA drives in this computer?

Hi WSH,

If you do not have hard drives attached to the SATA ports, then yes they are available for your optical drives.

However, if you have SATA hard drive(s), the 4600 is one of the last systems to have two IDE channels, so basically you can make use of the Primary IDE channel for a IDE (PATA) DVD+/-RW drive; thus separating an IDe device to its own channel.
Many people like to save the second SATA port for an additional hard drive.

Best Regards

God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do
and the eyesight to tell the difference.
