DVD/CD burner will burn cd but not dvd
My burner will only burn cds and not dvds. I've tried 3 different brands of dvds and none of them work. I have burned dvds in this drive in the past. My burner is a NEC-ND1100a. It burns DVD+R.RW media. I've also cleaned the drive and nothing seems to help.

If memory serves that's the same model drive that came in my Dimension 8200 which would make it 8 or 9 years old.
Likely the DVD write laser has failed and the drive will need to be replaced. CD writting uses a seperate laser.

That's what I was wondering. I think it is probably about 6 or 7 years old so I suppose it could just be worn out.

Hi Brendarenee14,
Just to make sure you understand the problem, you cannot use Windows XP to write to any DVD media. You must use a third party application such as Roxio or Sonic. Are you using such an application when attempting to burn DVD discs?
Here's a little trick I recommend to be absolutely sure your drive has failed. Go to Osprey's Toolbox (link below) and follow the link for DVD Identifier. After downloading and installing that program, try reading a blank DVD disc in your drive. If DVD Identifier is unable to read the disc, then your laser is probably dead.

Yes, I tried to use Roxio first.
I installed the program that you suggested. This is the results that came back.
I assume from this information, the laser is dead...correct? If so, what would you suggest as a replacement.

Yes, then it appears you need a new drive.
Your system requires an IDE optical drive. They're a bit harder to find in stores. You might want to try Ebay.

What is an IDE optical driver? Are they harder to find b/c my computer is older? Would I just search IDE optical driver or do I need to search for something else?
Thank you for all of your help!

Not driver. You need an IDE drive, like this.

I hope its ok to post my question here.
I have the same problem. I tried this and DVD Identifier reads my disc without errors. Does that mean my drive is haveing some other problems?
I am using tdkdvdrw0404n, empty dvd-s are dvd-r. Is that relevant?

Hi Heheh,
If DVD Identifier can read blank DVD media, then that indicates the hardware is probably fine.
So perhaps you could explain what problem you are having, because it seems your problem is different.

Yes, your drive can definitely write both + and -, so that's not the problem.
The write speed miscompare error could be either a media or firmware problem. I do not recommend any Ritek media, so if you have something else, try it. Also, go to Downloads (via Support, link above) and see if there's a f/w update for your drive.
You could also perform a search for "Write Speed Miscompare" and see if anything helps.
