Hi REPG,

I would suggest you to try running the MS Fix it for optical drive issues:

support.microsoft.com/.../en-us

If that doesn’t work, you can try to update the optical drive firmware & the BIOS of your system. Click on the below link & enter the service tag of the system for the available downloads:

www.dell.com/.../04

If you don’t see any downloads for the optical drive, then you can try searching on www.support.dell.com using the optical drive hardware id.

To find the hardware id of the optical drive, click on start, type device manager & hit enter. When the device manager is launched, you can click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to expand it. You’ll see a 5 or 6 digit optical drive id followed by the drive name.

If the issue is still not resolved, you may have to replace the optical drive of the system. If your system is covered with the Dell hardware warranty, we will be able to replace the parts for you without any additional cost.

You can click on the below link & enter the service tag to check the warranty status of your system:

www.dell.com/.../Index

Please post back if you need any further help.

It is possible for the DVD laser to fail while the CD laser remains functional.  To verify this, run the Dell Diagnostics to test the drive.  The Diagnostics may be on your hard drive.  Press F12 at startup while the blue Dell is on the screen.  This will take you to the boot menu where the Utility Partition or Diagnostics will be a choice.  Run the Custom Test for the drive and have a data DVD (not movie DVD) in the drive for the read test.

Should the Diagnostics refuses to read the DVD, then you will need to replace the drive.

Look in the Device manager and post the brand and model of the drive.
