Dell Latitude CP M233XT Replacement Hard drive

Can anybody help me with this?

My Latitude CPM233XT's hard drive's currently having problems.
I think it's hard drive failure. The hard disk is an IBM DTCA23240. Can I replace it with  IBM DADA-26480?

Except that I REALLY wouldn't recommend replacing an IBM drive with another IBM drive. IBM/Hitachi TravelStar hard drives are notorious for going bad or corrupting in very short periods of time. Most laptop manufacturers use IBM drives, unfortunately.

If you haven't bought one yet, get a Toshiba drive - you can find them at a good price at www.zipzoomfly.com or a similar site (e.g. newegg or another computer parts retailer). Just a thought.

If you are talking about late model drives, I will not dispute what you say; however the DADA-264800 is an older drive, which I have used several times on BIOS limited Laptops I restored and sold, and have not had a complaint yet. They all checked bad sector Free and no problems, even though they were made as long as 6 years ago.

Thanks for your advice but do you think I can replace hard disk drive with a newer model?

A 20gb will be no problem if your BIOS version is reasonably up to date. That should not cost you more than 80+ dollars though, as www.zipzoomfly.com has a 40gb in that series in that price range.

My experience is that if youpartition a drive, unless you have an overriding reason, or required by your OS/Format combination, you end up underusing the upper partition, and the lack of the extra Drivespace on your lower boot drive actually slows you down. The 20gb size does not require the latter OS/Format consideration and your premise does not hold up in practice. So it comes down to whether you have that overriding reason. As long as you have a BIOS version later than A06(?),you are fine.

My laptop's BIOS is the latest that DELL has for this model (LATITUDE CP M233XT). Do you think this is enough? I'm planning to partition the hard disk so it won't slow down my system.

Thanks for your reply.

My Latitude CPM233XT's BIOS is A16 so I think it's going to be fine. What can you suggest so I can still achieve my laptop's maximum potential while using a newer hard disk model? A friend of my told me that's it would still make my system slower if I will use a newer hard disk compared to an older one.

Your friend has been eating too much fermented applesauce. The 5400 rpm drives-or 7200 rpm if you can afford it- have faster access times and larger buffers than your old drive, and will have more drivespace with their bigger capacity. Newegg.com has a 30gb Hitachi 5400rpm for around $80 that is almost made to order for your model and a 40gb 7200rpm for $130 that I have now in the machine shown. The 30gb was installed previously; both are nice drives. You may have mentioned this, but the RAM should be maxed out at 128mb.
