Dell Media Direct Uninstalling/Replacing CD/DVD player/rewriter

Inspiron 1720 Dual Core T7500, 2gs Ram, Windows Vista Home Premium, Twin HD 150 gs each.

1. Would it be possible to remove Dell Media Direct and replace it with Win DVD or Power DVD without causing major problems.

2. Are there better CD/DVD rewritable drives for Laptops than the TSSTcorp-DVD+-TS-L632H-ATA Device. It makes any awful lot of noise and sometimes sounds like it is struggling to get started.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

You do not need to replace the Dell Media Direct.  Just install
WinDVD or PowerDVD as they are independant programs.
