Error message: Drive 0 not found, Serial ATA, SATA 0 help!

I am a computer novice.  My daughter's desktop got a blue screen and when she rebooted it, it doesnt boot back up.  The error codes are:

Floppy diskette seek failure

(then after a few seconds the following error message comes up)

Drive 0 not found: Serial ATA, SATA 0

It is a Dell Dimension E310 w/ Windows XP Home Edition

Anyone got ideas on how to find the hard drive again or is it shot?

"Drive 0 not found: Serial ATA, SATA 0"

This is your main concern, what can cause this?

1. Hard drive has failed

2. Hard drive data cable has failed or come loose.

3. The bios has lost its hardware configuration, enter the bios and go to the maintenance section and "load defaults" save changes on exit.

I am guessing it is 1 or 2, since it all started with a blue screen. But check the easy stuff first 2 and 3.

Check the hard drive data cable, replace it if you have a spare.

Run the Dell Diagnostics "extended tests" by pressing F12 several times during the Dell splash screen at boot time.
