Formatting and reinstalling WIN98SE

I have been advised to redo my 6 year old hard drive.
1. Do I need to clean the drive first?
2. When I choose the format and recover hard drive option ,message : Drive C will be lost. Do you wish to continue/? Whether I answer yes or no I get error message " Format command has failed. make sure recover CD is in drive and try again"
3. Is there some prepatory step that I have missed?
4. I am using the recovery CD that came with my system.

Since the drive is 6 years old it has probably died. That is why the format command is failing.

What was the problem that started this whole exercise.

sounds like you're trying to format C whilst in windows, something which you cannot do.
try booting from the win98 cd then use the format command.

It had become somewhat unstable so it was recommended that I clean it off and start over. I had paid  to have it redone  and the person installed a Plus! version and it really gummed up the system as it was a dirty reinstall.

6 yrs is a long time for a hard drive to last in the original laptop.

I would suggest going to newegg or zipzoomfly and purchase a new one.

This is a great hard drive to start off with. Much better than the origianl.

Format and reinstall went well. Yes a second hard drive might be a good purchase but it is compatible    with an Inspiron7500?

I would not recommend anything that would not work for you.

Didn't mean to offend but as it is an older model it takes a different size of hard drive.  I shall look into it. Thanks

Update the bios and you can use just about any new drive.
I have used 40 and 80 gig drives without issue.
