HDD on boot-up requires a password
Inspiron 6000 lap on XP.
Suddenly on startup a HDD password screen comes up asking for a password.
This password was never set.
Taking the HDD out and using it with an enclosure on another computer won't even be recognized.
Is this issue resolvable?

Hi, bmgbmm:
You'll need to contact Dell directly for help. They will require proof of ownership, for obvious reasons.

Spoke to Dell.
Explained the lock-up at boot asking for a password for the HDD.
Since the lap is out of warranty they wanted $49. + tax to coach me over the phone to possibly solve the problem.
If it was determined to be a software problem they'd pass me over to the software dept.
If it was mechanical in nature they would suggest sending the lap in for service at $250 + .
Q.?
If the password was never entered is this a HDD failure?
Is it a software issue?
Is there a password for this 60G Toshiba drive available to unlock it?
Or
Give up and buy another HDD and reload?

You need to use Osprey4's posted solution for this and contact Dell.
