HDD-password lost

I've installed Windows XP on my DELL VOSTRO 1720 vith Windows Vista preinstalled on c-drive.

Windows XP was installed on a new partition called e-drive.

So far so good, XP worked fine, was uppdated and drivers installed, re-booting several times.

Once upon at time was asked for the HDD-password, and I sett in the old HDD-password I'm used to - but - suprice - not accepted by the computer.

Now it seemst that I've lost the whole HD because I'm unable to open XP and unable  to go back to Vista.

I'm able to get into BIOS, but don't see how to boot from the c-drive without the HDD-password.

Now I'm asking: Have I lost my HD, or exist any solution ?????

If I have to install a new HD, wil I be able to set the HD-password ?

Heureka! I'm alive, and my DELL VOSTRO is working again with Windows XP 8>))

Here is how I got it work:

Got into BIOS by clicking steadly F2 by booting.

Got to EXIT and celected on "Load Setup Defaults"

- And now my HDD-password is the same as before!

Good Luck.

As long as you have the administrator password to the system, you can remove the hard drive password from the BIOS setup - if you didn't set a hard drive password but the prompt appeared, the usual cause is a drive that has failed.

The usual way is to change it, leaving it blank (i.e., reset it to a blank password).  Note that this won't remove the password from the hard drive itself, though.

It needs to be done in BIOS setup - it cannot be done under any operating system.
