HELP!!! MY HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD VANISHED

A couple of months ago, I noticed that my E310 desktop computer CD/DVD stopped reading my music CDs. Then I noticed that the DVD wasn't playing either. Now when I go to the system information, it does not show any information for the that drive. When I uninstalled and reinstalled the drive, nothing happened. I really, really, need to fix this problem. Can anyone help me...

Look in the Device Manager click on the (+) next to DVD/CD-ROM
drives.  Right-click the drive and select Properties.  Is there
an Error Code (number)?

I'm have a Studio Hybrid 140g that I bought in February and I'm having the same problem as of yesterday. It goes through all of Dell's diags fine and it shows up in the Device Manager but not under "Explore" in My Computer.

This is what I get...

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Hey skybrid,

I was just wondering if you could help me also,

Ive only purchased this Desktop 3 days ago (Inspirion 518), and now I my dvd cd drive cant read any cd's, it plays any dvd's fine.  but Im trying to install a few programs and when I insert the cd's it says there no cd in drive.

I believe problem occured after I succesfully installed: 'BELKIN automatic Power Management Software' (power board with back up battery incase power goes out)

Since then even the BELKIN cd that I installed cant be read nor other cd's.

any Idea's?

Just_greatt,

Run the Dell Diagnostics on the drive if it is on your hard drive.
Press F12 at startup while the blue Dell shows on the screen.  This
will enter the boot menu.  Choose Utility Partition or Diagnostics.
Run the Custom Test on the drive and have a data CD (not music CD)
ready for the test.

Hey Skybird, thanks for helping me by the way, really appreciate it.

But yeah, I ran the Diagnostics on the drive, via boot menu and as I viewed the drive list I noticed the drive is called:

CDROM/DVD
"SATA DVD+RW/DVD-RW1 : DVD+-RW GSA-H73N" < theres no mention of CD? that right?

also as I ran the Drive Diagnostics, window came up saying:

"The CD inserted in you CD-ROM drive does not contain any data tracks. You must insert a CD containing data such as a software installation CD if you would like to try again. Would you like to try again."

I tried 4 different data disks all the same result. After trying 4 times I chose the no option and continued the Diagnostic.
When Running the: BUILT IN SELF TEST (TEST ALL) a error popped up;

"Error Code 0F00:2870
Msg: DVDRW_1 - Drive OPU Self test failed, remove any disk"

Other Info:

NA confidence test
:emotion-21: device quick check
NA read test
NA seek test
:emotion-45: built in self test(test all)

drive still not reading cd's, thanks again by the way, and sorry for writing heaps.

The description of your drive by the system is correct.
DVD drives, by default, read CD media.  The error code
you received the drive has failed or is on its way.
Apparently the CD laser has failed while the DVD laser
is still functioning.

It appears you are still within the warranty.  Contact Dell
and tell them you ran the Diagnostics on the drive and the
error code it returned plus the fact it will not recognize CD
media.  They should send you a replacement drive.
