Hard dive recovery from Error code 0146
Hi,
I am new to the forum & looking for some advice please.
We have a Dell studio 1555 which recenlty came up with Error code 0146. I have put a new 500GB,s hard drive in & added W7, all ok. Unfortunately my Son has not backed up all the drive on our external HD.
I have bought a SATA/USB hard drive enclosure to try to recover files off the old drive of 320 GBs. The files we want to recover are photos & college work.When I look in windows explorer on our main PC I have two letters, I think there was a dell partition at 15Gbs.
F/ shows Recovery of 15GB's, which I can see the sub folder files;
G/ says Local disc, right clicking on the egg timer comes on for a while & says it requires formatting, unable to see any sub folders. My questions are; has that part of the drive been wiped & what can I try to read the drive?
I would like to sort it myself, as I am into PC issues etc & with these sympthoms will a proffesional be able to recover?

G was the Windows partition - if it's that far gone you'll need to try recovery software on the drive. However, realize that anything you do with the drive could potentially reduce the chances of successful recovery - so if the data is vitally important, you must now consider whether professional recovery - which can cost thousands of dollars - is worthwhile. If it is, get that done.
If not, there are some tools you can try to use for recovery (Recuva is a basic tool that's free; Ontrack's Easy Recovery is free to try, etc.).

You don't really want to be installing software on a partition that you are trying to recover. This is because the data you are after may have been unallocated and now living in "available space". If you install the software it's going to get put in that same available space. If you recover data to the same partition it will also write the data to available space. This is going to cause a significant amount of permanent data loss. A self-booting recovery option like RecoverBot could be a better way to go.

Hi,
Thanks. Sorry for delay in replying. Before I so your reply briantg I added to our main PC Sea tools from Seagate. The HD failed the basic & long generic tests, with LBA errors. Long generic log file enclosed
. I have looked through the recover your lost files, it's interesting.
We have really given up on the recovery due to errors below, but may still try Recover Bot.
