How to Install a New DVD Burner
I have a Dell XPS 630 Desktop. I already have a dvd drive, but i want to add a 2nd one. I have the correct cables and I have a slot in the tower for it, but there is a metal piece that is blocking the way. I can unscrew one side but I can't open the tower on the other side to get to the second screw. Does anyone know how to get that metal piece out and so I can install my new dvd burner?

Hi Amrranth and welcome to DeLL forums.
Is your manual <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> of no help at all? I do not see any metal. On the other hand I do not own a 630 but my 410 is almost the same for the CD/DVD bays.

I didn't see anything in the manual about how to install the physical dvd burner. I know how it should happen, I just can't figure out how to remove the metal slot.
This is the picture from the front This is a picture from inside the tower

Hello,
On some Dell systems, there is a removable plate in the CD slot.
The one I worked on needed to be removed by twisting until the little tabs broke. :emotion-29:

I don't think I should try to pull on it till something broke :emotion-3: it is connected to the already installed driver. I can see that the metal slot it connected by two screws on either side, but I can't get to the far side because i don't think I can take the other side panel off of the tower.

Maybe the discussion and images HERE can help you mount the DVD drive in the XPS 630.

From the sounds of it, you might be using the wrong slot for a CD/DVD drive.

For future reference: instructions for changing hardware are given in the XPS 630 Service manual (not the same as the user manual). You can see it on line or download to your PC from
