How to install and setup Samsung 840 SSD 120GB on Dell XPS 430???

Hi, Looks like Dell XPS 430 does not support Samsung 840 SSD drive. I have installed above ssd drive successfully but system once Windows 7 64bit was installed doesn't recognise it as AHCI and write speed of my new SSD is only 340MB/s instead of 520MB/s as advertised. I have Dell BIOS A01 installed and under the Drivers | SATA Operation there are only RAID Autodetect/ATA or. RAID On options available. There is no AHCI option to be selected. Even if I set RAID On option and go to SATA-0 driver where my new Samsung 840 is plugged it is showing all ssd drive details but Controller is showing as Serial ATA. Would you be able to help and advise how to get Samsung 840 SSD to recognise AHCI??.? My XPS430 spec is: Intel Core 2 Duo Q9400 2.66GHz, 6MB, 1333MHz Mother Board D04X303 Memory: 4x1GB 1333MHz DDR3 Dual System: windows Vista Home Premium 32bit SP1 and upgraded to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit Any help will be much appreciated Thanks,geniu22

Hi Geniu22,

AHCI does not appear to be supported for your model.

So is there any alternative to have ssd installed on my PC? Is it all to do with my mother board or BIOS version?? Many thanks

It sounds from what you said that you've got it installed but that the data transfer rate is a bit slow. You could try an SATA controller card to improe the speed but I'm not sure whether your system will boot from a drive connected via a controller card.

The advertised speed is for SATA 6 Gbit/s, which your older Dell is not equipped with. SATA 6 Gbit/s is a recent standard that many computers and motherboards even today are not equipped with.

You're doing well to get the speed you are.
