Inspiron 1545 - Optiarc DVD +-RW AD-7580S registry config. info damaged - code 19

So, my DVD drive ewas working perfectly a day or two ago but now Device Manager says:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

I've tried to use System Restore twcie to no avail - just comes back with System Restore failed due to an unexpected error.  Have D/L new firmware from Dell but the app. just says that there isn't a drvie connected!

Anybody encountered this before I go fro a full system re-install!
